We have 13 players and need those openings to add someone high-priced at the Midseason Trade Deadline to meet the minimum team salary.

Montero just isn't good enough to occupy one of our valuable spots for a whole year. He's playing badly against D-Leaguers this week.

we some how developed will barton's uncontrolled instincts into an $11million dollar contracted nba player, I won't say it can't be done with this kid too. backup pg really is the 1 position requiring the most discipline though IMHO, something I see nothing of to this point at vegas

    His guaranteed contract says otherwise.

The kid strikes me as someone who has insane raw talent, but hasn't been playing organized ball very long. He's someone that would probably benefit greatly just from being in the practices and learning from pro teammates. He could be something special if they give him enough time.

The blazers didn't sign Montero for what he is right now. They signed him for what he could become a year or two down the road. Making judgements on him for what you see today is, well, interesting. Also dumb.

Barton--2 years at Memphis, a major college program
Montero--1 year at Westchester Community College

After trying him out in the preseason, we will stash Montero in the D-League until he's good and ready.

You deny that we sent Coby Karl down to a year of D-League? Plus others with guaranteed contracts?

Pretty sure coby karl never had a guaranteed contract. Did he even make the team?? And back then the blazers had an exclusive partnership with a dleague team I believe.

There's a reason why Portland hasn't really sent down anyone to the d league recently. Even guys that could've used it.

Yep, Coby Karl wasn't guaranteed. I give up, you're right. I'll put Montero onto my roster that I keep.

Man, what a mistake. He needs a year or two in the D-League. Whole seasons.

taking a flyer on a 6'7 rookie PG in the midst of a rebuild isn't a mistake.

The beauty of having about 13 is that we could pick up the best player waived the day before the season starts, and still have one slot to trade midseason for a big contract, to meet the minimum team salary. Now with 14 (going on 15 if this continues), we will pass up someone we wish we could have. Someone much better than Montero. Let's see...6-8, weighed 181 in May, supposedly up to 195 now...he's a high school player*. His odds are worse than Telfair's.

*but aged 22, so his skeleton is set.

Seriously?? You do realize if a better option presents itself and Olshey needs his roster spot, he can release him???

What does tank barfo mean? Is this like a tank that pukes? Or a tank top that pukes rainbows? Something like this?

We don't have to meet minimum salary. People keep posting like it's some vital regulation. If we come up short all that happens is the organization shells out the balance evenly to the players on the roster. So for a hypothetical let's say the team is $13mill under the minimum and they have 13 players under contract. Each player then gets a $1million bonus. We will keep a spot or 2 open for flexibility if someone needs a 3rd wheel in a trade, but Neil is going to try to roll as much if the capspace as possible into next season. I suspect Paul Allen is aware and on board.

He reminds me a lot of Livingston for some reason.

He can do both and I bet he will. He can benefit from practicing with the Blazers and being around them, and also play in the D league. "Whole seasons" is not necessary.

He's a practice player, not a rotation player for us. His contract is stuctured in the teams favor. We keep him locked away from others, but he isn't costing us anything except for the payroll check (thanks Paul Allen!). Same deal as with Frazier. Its win/win for the team.

If an opportunity comes along to obtain a serious NBA player for our future rotation - you should bet that the team will quickly release those players and take the rotation player!! I think its quite obvious!

He's got interesting skills. Tall, fluid, good handles, and seems to be able to stroke the ball pretty well. Now, its about his work ethic and playing more under control.
    Let's see what happens.

Montero is pretty much a less skilled/seasoned version of Jamal Crawford without the consistent jump shot yet. Although his shot doesn't look bad, he just needs to keep working to get some more consistency out of it. From the fancy dribbling to the unnecessary look away passes, he reminds me of him so much it's kinda scary. If he can become anything like Crawford, that'll be very impressive that Portland was able to find him from pretty much nowhere.

I don't care if it's D-League, that's great ball control and court vision! Better than anything we've seen since 'Dre. He might be a long-shot, but I really hope he pans out - having a TALL PG would be awesome!
