I don't think its an FU to Devils fans, I think its obvious he was forced out by the Devils now. They moved him up to President and brought in Shero, clearly he still wanted to be GM

He had his time but he has been irrelevant for 10 years now for the most part. If I am a Leafs fan I am like WTF that is the best we can do???

Lou has been a terrible GM for years. Remember how I told the moron Devils fans that on ESPN and they went nuts for 2 years. Now, they all said the same thing. Stupid asswipes.

Very surprising to see this. Somebody tell Shanny this isn't 25 years ago.

Lou's success came during the clutch and grab era which almost ruined the game of hockey. The NHL did everything they could to help Lou win to build popularity for the laughingstock Debbies in the Metro area by reinterpreting the rules and letting Lou loosely play with free agency and contract rules. Marty racked up the wins and Scotty cheapshot made a name for himself as his blindside borderline penalty hits were celebrated while he ran and hid from anyone looking for a piece of him. A few parking lot parades and a new arena later they're drawing crickets. Lou is taking a position with a team so screwed up that even he can't make it any worse, any modicum of success boosts Lou's legend in an original 6 hockey town.

Lou has definitely been pretty much a horrible GM the last 10 years so this move makes zero sense for Toronto but I will still give the Devils their due from early 90's-2003. They drafted very well and clutch and grab or not, they played a great system but also developed some amazing talent from within. That is ancient history now and Lou should have been fired 5 years ago but let's not forget their run of not just titles but some very good players.

perhaps some of the decisions that Lou made had more to do with the cash flow restrictions he was given...that wont be a problem in Toronto

I can't recall exactly what/when, but i believe Lou also made some really bad mistakes with draft picks. I think it was with the whole Kovalchuk fiasco where the Devs had to forfeit their 1st rd pick one year and they choose to keep the 29/30th pick which meant next year the 1st rounder would be forfeited and ended up being a top 10ish pick?

Finances had nothing to do with it. There is a cap. There is no excuse for drafting poor and signing rejects to big money that didn't deserve it. His FA signings were like that of the Rangers years ago when they were stupid.

Agree 100%. Lou and the Devils deserve a ton of credit for their great run and 3 cups. Now to me the game has passed him by the past 5-7 years IMO, but please let's not act as if he doesn't deserve big credit for what the Devs did winning 3 cups.

Lou will go down as one of the great GM's in hockey. Not a Devil fan, but for 8 yrs or so, they were very tough to play against. Sure they played the trap, but they had some outstanding hockey player's on those late 90's early 2000's teams. This team fell apart with the loss of Kovulchuk, Parise, Oduya and a few others . It's amazing how classless some of the posters on this board are. Good luck Lou, you were always a class act.

How many players left that team in free agency vs how many stars were brought in?
