6 years, $6.5M is overpaid for a second line talent. Well, now we zero cap space left, so next offseason we will definitely lose Etem and Yandle so we might as well look at trading those two during the season for draft picks. I'll be especially mad if there's a NTC for Stepan.

That hit is about the best we could have hoped for after ROR/Saad/Kesler. Perfectly fine with it.

Quick question though. I thought we only had $6.1M left in the cap. If Stepan's hit is $6.5 how does this work? We obviously have to move someone, most likely Diaz, down to Hartford but then what was the point of signing him?

that's a lot but that's the going price. NMC would really suck, however.

Buffalo screwed the market up with that ROR contract. Even though Stepan couldn't use it in his arbitration hearing, he used it to justify what he perceived as his market value.

We had roughly 6.75 in cap space before this deal, and that includes 8D (the 6 plus Diaz and McIlrath). I doubt we have 8 on the roster come opening day.

GeneralFanager.com is a pretty good site for checking on caps (probably the best now that capgeek is gone). They have us with about 425k of space left.

Ok. Thanks for that. Tough to figure out an accurate site now with cap geek gone.

If they gave him a NTC or NMC, I'm personally going to drive to MSG and kick Gorton in the nuts.

If they gave him one, the Sather is still in control and Gorton is just a figurehead.

I hadn't realized Saad had signed an extension. 6/$36 is going to hurt next year when Kreider is due for a raise. Ouch.

and i don't view Kesler as a comparable, as he's a finished product, an UFA, and has had a long successful career.

I expect the Rangers to move Nash next off season. Mark staal could also be an option to be move for this team to keep a majority of the youth going forward after this season.

The problem with Staal is that, even though he's a good dman, he has a high hit and has a NTC so he can determine where he goes.

I turned about to be pretty close. I said 6 years 6 mill per +/-. Happy Stepan was smart about it and accepted and very fair deal for all involved. Just because Buffalo went nuts on ROR doesn't mean that was the market setting deal.

I am with you Prod, I like this deal. I said yesterday I want no part of anything that started with a 7. Getting Step long term for 6.5 per is very fair. To me it shows the ROR deal was not the market setter IMO...and rightfully so.

The Staal resigning is the one mistake I see on the roster now. Has to be him or Yandle, I standby that comment...cannot have both long term.

Next year get Hayes and Kreider and Miller done. All are behind Stepan, so will be less on their next deals.

I think we are in as good of a spot as we could be considering everything. Just need to make a choice on Staal or Yandle. I would choose Yandle, but not sure we can get out from under Staal's deal.

And no shot we have 8 dmen on the roster, so I expect a little extra cap space. Figure 7 dmen and 13 forwards.
