Both songs are ill as hell. I'm going with AZ- The Format mostly because this is a semi new guy coming into the game and showing what he can do on a mainstream level. I have a Dream by Common is a deep song though and ill as F*ck.

He might not be new but he's new to a lot of people since nobody had heard about him that much.I haven't listened to Common's song I'm gonna do it right now.
Well in my eyes it is, haha. The format is good lyrically, beat is fire, flows like nothing ive ever heard before, its just all around crazy. I Have a Dream is great song too, the Format just blows me away.
I just listen for the production, and IMHO What you Know (produced by Toomp for T.I.) was my favorite beat of the year.

What does mainstream sucess have to do with anything?Laffy Taffy was the #1 song for a bit..does that mean it was one of the top songs of the year?a song isnt good just because a million people bought the cda song is good if it's good...

My favorite was Lupe's The Instrumentalfollowed by Jay's Beach Chair.The Format is a solid pick though.

Of course The Format and all these other songs were good, theres no question about it. But, IF were looking at the "Hip Hop Song of the Year" I think we should look at it all. Laffy Taffy was a piece of bullshitted crap, but wasnt it the #1 song of the year at the time? Hip Hop Song of the year takes into account mainstream success whether you like it or not. Thats why "What You Know" had to be the song of the year.If I gave you my personal opinion of song of the year, I def. would have chosen another song, but IMO looking at it right from a birds eye view, my choice is justified to me.
I agree with HeatFan, The Instrumental is effin sick. I could listen to that song for hours. But The Format is iLL, A close 2nd for me. Im currently listening to it right now."Rapid fire, pecks through the abdominal You bastard liars, it's me whos the honorable"^__^
One of my favorite is Lean with it Rock with it, just because I like the beat and I just love to lean with it ROCK with it. Oh yeah, its also my ringtone and its first on my playlist, even tho I dont listen to it as much anymore.
