@SlyPokerDog Why is this shit ok? Why is there no forum rule about it? There's a difference between blatant racism and simply just offensive.... Calling someone fat is offensive. Calling someone a fat nigger is completely different.
I imagine the obviously humorous intent would be what would make what MM posted acceptable, while the hostility in the example you gave would not be. To that end, there's certainly an argument to be made in favor of race-related jokes being one of many tools to break down inter-racial division. Are we better off pretending that differences don't exist, or accepting and acknowledging our differences via light-hearted ribbing? In my mind, race-based comments become problematic not because of their content so much as their reception. I work with a Spaniard, a Mexican and a Vietnamese woman, and we all joke about our ethnic and cultural differences (mine [or my lack thereof] included), and it works because we all understand that there is no ill intent, and it's all based in camaraderie. If any of us chose to take any comments personally, then we'd be an HR nightmare; the mutual understanding and respect is what makes our interactions OK.
Sooo it's ok to be racist as long as we don't respond negatively to it? MM's comments are is in NO WAY based in comradeship... There is no mutual understanding between he and I. As a matter of fact the mutual understanding is that he's being racist....
Since I wasn't nominated for anything else, I vote myself as the official twitter/media correspondent. I will be the one to share league wide rumors, while also spreading misinformation to agents and Woj, et al
I can't speak for MM, and don't intend to. I only speak from my own perspective and experience. If you made a joke about me having no hops, unable to dance, or having inferior genitalia, I would not care. It could be considered racist, but it would be OK, because I would be OK with it. If you tell me that I am a bigot because I'm white, I might take offense to that. That would also be racist, and not OK. In my mind, both intent and reception are important. If either the comments are intended to demean, or the hearer feels demeaned, then there is a problem. However, if the speaker is considerate of the hearer's feelings, and both are OK with the comments, then yes, race-based comments--even those involving racist stereotypes--can be acceptable.
Only if you make sure our twitter feed is full of snark and trash talk. I will not permit a boring tweeter.
Did you read them? No because you have on ignore. It was completely based on comradeship because mags and i joke. He even liked the post.
Not agreeing or disagreeing, but what you listed as racist isn't racist. To say someone doesn't have hops. How is that racist? or unable to dance? That is not pinpointing a specific race or races and calling them out. There is a difference between a racist and being an asshole. Now if he said you cant jump because your white, or Asian, or plutonian, then that would be racist... and maybe that's what you meant.
Yes, that's what I meant. dviss1 has never met me personally, so all of those would be race-based stereotypes rather than statements based on actual observation. I erroneously assumed that it was implied since all of those are commonly understood stereotypes of white men.
I think my issue is that i view everyone in here as a sort of friend. One common goal, same interest, etc. While none really are, i still joke.
To achieve that level of respect one should at least know the person they are joking with and have established some rapport. He doesn't know me, nor have we established any rapport... As a matter of fact we've established just the opposite...
Jeez. The amount of bitter acrimony on this board is incredible. Kiss your mother with that mouth. I suggest some cognitive behavioral therapy in the future.
I hear you. He was actually joking with Mags, with whom he has in fact established rapport. In all reality, it was wrong of me to even bring you up in relation to his jokes, because they had nothing to do with you directly, just race overall. I apologize for stirring up dissension.
Could someone tell dviss that i was speaking to mags, who knew i was joking, and not him. Im worried hes gonna blow a fuse.
So, I want to sit in the draft room and smile and nod whenever PA says anything. Can I have that job?
