Something for the dog days of summer: Michael Jordan, Clyde Drexler, Jerome Kersey and some other guys nobody here gives a crap about in the NBA dunk contest. Back in the day when the best performed instead of hiding on the sidelines like today.
my break down goes as follows Jordan shouldn't have made it past the first round, I think its bullshit that he was allowed to just coast into the second round like that Drexler gave up, but I think it was because he saw kersey was felling it and let him get after it. should have come down to stansberry and kersey for the final kersey got screwed on scores in the final round
Jordan got a pass on the first round, but he definitely had the style points from that point on. I watched that this morning and it just reminded me how fun that team was with both Drexler and Kersey able to do the high-flying act.
Man those old dunk contests with Jordan, Drexler and 'Nique were epic. I'm not half into the All-Star game as was back then. Amazing.
but if he hadn't gotten the pass, he never would have gotten said style points I love that kersey brought it right off the bat, just like he did in games. and if I am remembering right, didn't even do a redo dunk until the final. that's gotta be worth something too don't you think!?
No. There's only so much you can do given the parameters (10' hoop, gravity, etc). That's why everyone has resorted to gimmicks over the past 20+ years. The event should be retired. Hell, All-Star weekend should be scrapped altogether - or at least played in the summer if it HAS to exist.
If the NBA gets smart and moves the All Star Festivities and the All Star Game to the end of the playoffs after the championship there might be a chance!
I think you mean Ron Harper, not Derek. Unless Bo Outlaw was the PF for that team. BTW, Ron Harper went from scoring 20ppg for a crappy set of LAC teams (and the late-80's Cavs teams) to scoring 7 with lockdown D while playing with MJ. In 96-97, he had a ORtg of 120 and a DRtg of 102. And then he won back-to-back with the L*kers. 5 rings in 6 years.
that was one of the good ones but i think vince carter was probably the most exciting contest ever. he really brought a bunch of unique stuff and seemed to exhaust all the creativity possible
It certainly had a more competitive feeling when it was replace 1 dunk and 1miss. This everyone wins participation ribbon waste the crowds excitement on 20 misses route has finished it off.
