guess you missed the just kidding part of that but he was as public and trusted news figure as most newspapers or magazines have. He's also not the only one. News can be spun and has been...that's the opposite of naive..I worked in message processing during the Nixon administration and believe me...you can't always rely on information that is supposed to be coming from credible sources.

You can't possibly be so naive to believe that innocent people/companies never settle. Not that I believe that Oden is innocent--I think he's absolutely guilty and deserves to be in jail. But your "if he didn't do it why did he settle" logic is severely flawed.
If I were rich and had the means to do so, and making it go away quietly would be less expensive (as well as less personally taxing) than going through a protracted trial, very possibly. I would at the very least consider all the pros and cons.

Think about it--if a trial were going on, he would have to stay in the states, meaning he wouldn't be able to go over to China to play ball. I'm willing to bet that his salary this year is going to be greater than the amount of any settlement he had to pay. Even if he's innocent, he comes out ahead by settling. I'm sure he'd much rather his life and energy be focused on basketball than defending his innocence. I can understand that.
