"American cultures" was the funniest class i ever took in college. If they put every country on there, the huge red bar of the US would basically the equivalent of what Spain is.
The chart takes that into account I believe because the rate of suicide deaths by firearm is double the homicide rate.
Ugh...getting off topic from this horrendous shooting. But I've heard several comedians say that they won't do shows on college campuses anymore, because college kids these days have such a stick up their ass about political correctness. Probably from stupid classes like the one you attended.
Another problem with those murder rate statistics, that are so often quoted, is that it lumps all of the US into one, but we are the size of Europe, and very diverse. We have inner cities with homicide rates like that of south american countries, and we have areas (with just as many guns) where the murder rate is as low as it is in Europe.
That's a nice non sequitur, but no. Having pride in where you're from is never a problem, hence no problem with Mexican pride. The counter to that would be saying you couldn't have American pride, which is obviously false. Wherever you're from, there are World festivals in most every city in the country, if you're interested in that. Being white also isn't a religion. You're looking for Arab/Persian I'd guess, but I don't hear much about "Arab pride", probably because much like asians, a lot of them fucking hate each other based on country of origin, ergo back to geography and where you're from. You're counter would be Christianity, and there's probably no country in the world full of proud Christians than the U.S. The only apple to apple comparison would be white vs. black pride. Black pride exists because black Americans were told they were sub-human for the first 100+ years of America's history and then continued to be treated like they were for another 100. So they created a narrative for themselves to be proud of. They call it black pride because they have no ties to a nebulous Africa, and wouldn't know where in Africa they're from even then, unlike most anyone else you came to America. The militant black power movement is racist, obviously. You're more than welcome to be proud of where you're from. You can be proud of your Irish/Scottish/British/Italian/Dutch heritage. You can be proud of your country or the country you were born in. You can also proudly proclaim your religion. None of this is equal to being prideful in your skin color, or using it to feel superior to someone else because of theirs. White pride has been co-opted by the White power/Klan/Neo-Nazi movements. If you want to change that, you should take that up with them, instead of using lazy, shallow arguments to try and pretend to show how slighted and mistreated white people are. ---------------------- On-topic - I hope the shooter felt the moment part of his brain got turned into sloppy joe's...
This is a work related tragedy. The racist claim by the murderer was coming from his own demented thought process. Why make that anything other than what it is? It's something folks need to get straight in this country..there are ways to address work related wrongs without shooting innocent people. The topic here is murder, emotional instability and weakness on the part of the culprit. I don't think, once again, that the reporter could have defended against this travesty. It was a cowardly act from an unstable man no matter what racial identity he came from. Crazy people are not unified by the color of their skin.My heart goes out to the families of these victims.
Seventy-two killed resisting gun confiscation in Boston! Boston – National Guard units seeking to confiscate a cache of recently banned assault weapons were ambushed by elements of a Para-military extremist faction. Military and law enforcement sources estimate that 72 were killed and more than 200 injured before government forces were compelled to withdraw. Speaking after the clash, Massachusetts Governor Thomas Gage declared that the extremist faction, which was made up of local citizens, has links to the radical right-wing tax protest movement. Gage blamed the extremists for recent incidents of vandalism directed against internal revenue offices. The governor, who described the group’s organizers as “criminals,” issued an executive order authorizing the summary arrest of any individual who has interfered with the government’s efforts to secure law and order. The military raid on the extremist arsenal followed wide-spread refusal by the local citizenry to turn over recently outlawed assault weapons. Gage issued a ban on military-style assault weapons and ammunition earlier in the week. This decision followed a meeting in early this month between government and military leaders at which the governor authorized the forcible confiscation of illegal arms. One government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, pointed out that “none of these people would have been killed had the extremists obeyed the law and turned over their weapons voluntarily.” Government troops initially succeeded in confiscating a large supply of outlawed weapons and ammunition. However, troops attempting to seize arms and ammunition in Lexington met with resistance from heavily-armed extremists who had been tipped off regarding the government’s plans. During a tense standoff in the Lexington town park, National Guard Colonel Francis Smith, commander of the government operation, ordered the armed group to surrender and return to their homes. The impasse was broken by a single shot, which was reportedly fired by one of the right-wing extremists. Eight civilians were killed in the ensuing exchange. Ironically, the local citizenry blamed government forces rather than the extremists for the civilian deaths. Before order could be restored, armed citizens from surrounding areas had descended upon the guard units. Colonel Smith, finding his forces over matched by the armed mob, ordered a retreat. Governor Gage has called upon citizens to support the state/national joint task force in its effort to restore law and order. The governor also demanded the surrender of those responsible for planning and leading the attack against the government troops. Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, and John Hancock, who have been identified as “ringleaders” of the extremist faction, remain at large. And this fellow Americans, is how the American Revolution began, April 20, 1775. On July 4th, 1776 these same extremists signed the Declaration of Independence, pledging to each other and their countrymen their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. Many of them lost everything, including their families and their lives over the course of the next few years. Lest we forget…

I was overwhelmed with emotion and could not hold back the tears. I began hugging my son very tightly and letting him know how privileged I am to be his father. He asked me if we should turn the channel. I told him no my son. We must see this and not sweep it under the rug. Only then can we change it.
