Four big games against Toronto and the start of the NFL season. It's times like this I don't mind the summer coming to a close. As long as the Yanks do go circa 1985 and let Toronto sweep them at home in early September. For those who remember that stretch it cost them the division that year. Was a good team with Henderson, Mattingly, Big Dave and Pags. Guidry had a cy young caliber season.
I remember that '85 stretch well. I came up to the stadium for games 2 & 3. The Yankees won game one on I think Wynegars home run to get the Yankees within two. Then the Yankees lost games 2, 3, and four. Baylor couldn't hit his shoe size and Winne stranded 11 runners in that series. Those '85 through '88 Yankee Teams could bop but damn pitching was shaky. I remember those shirts Winfield, Mattingly, Henderson etc, ect, who needs pitching.
Yep- It was a weekend series. Oct 4-5 Weird crazy season...Yanks were never in first place and managed to fall behind a bunch of games then drawing close throughout the season. Were 7.5 out on June 30 down to 1.5 July 20- Then fell 9.5 behind on August 2 and closed to 3 games behind Toronto going into the last series (3 games) at Toronto. Yanks won Friday closing to 2 games with 2 to go..... ......but lost Saturday 5-1 with Doyle Alexander going all the way for Toronto and Joe Cowley lost it for Yanks giving up 3 HRs in 2.1 innings. Yanks won meaningless game 8-0 on Sunday behind Phil Niekro's (16-12, 4.09) shutout against alot of backups for Toronto. Wondered what would've happened if Neikro had pitched Saturday instead of Cowley. There was some discussion whether Martin should start him over Cowley on that day. Neikro had pitched last on Sept 30.....five days prior.
