Question is pretty simple. Diop's contract is over at the end of the year. I'm betting he asks for more money than his last contract since he has played a ton better than his first few seasons in Cleveland. Do we resign him or do we part ways? I think this as good as he'll ever get. I think we have a player right behind him that almost as good as him in DJ Mbenga. Mbenga is here for a little while since he signed a contract extention last summer. I think we could let him go. We could always sign a journeyman backup, could draft another center, or ...gulp...bring back Pavel from the Euro leagues. (BTW any word on any improvement?) What are ya'll thoughts?
I think you should resign 2-4 Millions would be fair deal. He brings defense and hustle to the table and is young and MAY get better.
We need to keep him, he's great for us off the bench and even starting. If we let him walk then we will regret it later on.
There is no doubt in my mind Dallas should definitely try and extend his contract. The things he does for the team are so overlooked and underappreciated by the average fan. He deserves an extension, and I'd say something similar to Kendrick Perkins' extension would be pretty reasonable (around $4M per year).
It looks like Diop gets underrated even by mavs fans. He is definitely worth keeping. The list of players I think that don't add much to this team include Buckner, Croshere, Mbenga (poor man's Diop and more foul prone), and Anthony Johnson (slow). Johnson is only good in case of injuries but I think Diop is more important than any of those players mentioned.
you guys need him. He was invaluable against the spurs last year and though he is not a star he is solid and sometimes that is all you need.
Okay, this is exactly what I thought would happen. Everyone saying that there is no way we should let him walk that he is a much valued component to our team and what not. I think if anything, ya'll are overating him and inflating his value to the team. Diop isnt going to get much better. Thats the honest to God's truth. Yes, he is a very good role player, but as I see it, people in higher ranks within the organization think he might walk or might now want him back. There was a reason why we signed Mbenga to a long contract and it wasnt because they want him to be the highest paid 3rd center in the league. Mbenga can do exactly what Diop can do given the minutes. He is more athletic on both ends of the court and has better hands than both Damp and Diop. His jumpshot is better than Diop's as well. I believe Diop is a product of the Avery's defense and philosophy. Now I'm not trying to bash Diop by any means and wouldnt be mad by any means if he did return next season, I just dont think we exactly need him and shouldnt be the top priority of the offseason. Number 1 should be a quality wing scorer to replace Stackhouse wether we re-sign him or not. And number 2 should be finding a quality 4 to backup Dirk since we havent had one since the days of Najera.
I didn't even realize Diop was coming up. No one seemed to have been talking about it. I think we should extend him but not by much. Diop whether you want to think so or not has regressed this year from last. I don't know why, but he's not any better then he was last season(I expected improvement). This is why Dampier took over his starting job, rightfully so as he was better then Diop last year(the only reason he started was to light a fire under Damp and also to prevent him from early foul trouble. Diop was not better). Even with that said, I still think Diop provides us with Damp a capable and solid center rotation we've never had in years. So I think for that reason he should stay. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Now I'm not trying to bash Diop by any means and wouldnt be mad by any means if he did return next season, I just dont think we exactly need him and shouldnt be the top priority of the offseason. If some teams decides to bank on him with cash, then there nuts. I think that's why we haven't much about Diop's impending free agency. He's most likely to resign. But I agree with the other priorities although I think Mavs feel we have them in Ager/Pops. Pops I feel can be groomed into our backup 4. I really like him, as for Ager. He can fill that Stackhouse role nicely as he plays in the same manner. I think our biggest need is getting a starting 2 guard. I like Morris Petersen. If we can land him, move Jet to the bench. Our bench doesn't lose any offense.
Realgm and Hoops Hype both have him tell after 08. So he has this season and another season on his contract. I dont see a reason to let him go. 2-3, maybe 4 million a year cant hurt us. I like the Diop/Damp fighting for starting spot in the offseason
Me and Lazy were talking about this and how we didn't know Diop was a free agent after this year. So he ended up looking it up and it says Diop is here through 08'. So he's got one more year after this. Kind of makes this topic a little too early.
See, I was on the trade maker on espn, and it had him with an expiring contract. Okay, we'll bump it in a year.
I believe Harris is expiring. No doubt we should keep him. Diop still has some time to decide his fate with the mavs. I think he is underachieving so far this year but mainly because Dampier is taking most of the minutes. Dampier deserves it by the way he is playing but Diop would probably do better with more minutes.
