    ‘Irish slaves’: the convenient myth

The conflation of indentured servitude with chattel slavery in the ‘Irish slaves’ narrative whitewashes history in the service of Irish nationalist and white supremacist causes. Its resurgence in the wake of Ferguson reflects many Americans’ denial of the entrenched racism still prevalent in their society.

It was with a heavy heart and no small amount of anger that I decided it was necessary to write a public refutation of the insidious myth that the Irish were once chattel slaves in the British colonies. The subject of this myth is not an issue in academic circles, for there is unanimous agreement, based on overwhelming evidence, that the Irish were never subjected to perpetual, hereditary slavery in the colonies, based on notions of ‘race’. Unfortunately this is not the case in the public domain and the ‘Irish slaves’ myth has been shared so frequently online that it has gone viral.

Lmao Denny. of course you would post that. "Indentured servitude" isn't slavery I guess. But when you control a person and won't let them leave your compound by holding the children hostage, I guess you'd have a point if SlyPokerDog is an asshole.

Indentured servitude was a means to pay off a debt. It had a term/time limit associated. Nobody was born and died an indentured servant.

It sure seems that no historian worth his salt agrees with you.

So because the Government is ignorant, I have to pay money to my neighbor because someone enslaved his great, great, great, great uncle?

Should I be forced to give him my lawnmower also? I mean it's only fair, right?

I'm so sorry for what I never did to them...

Then again no one has done anything to them.

Can we deduct the value of goods looted from the amount to be paid?

He hasnt...although he has never returned my rake.

If they are all getting paid, they all have to be included in the deduction of looting funds.

Not all European servants were sent willingly. Several instances of kidnapping for transportation to the Americas are recorded and this falls more clearly into the category of "white slavery". While these white slaves were often indentured in the same way as their willing counterparts it is an important distinction. An illustrative example is that of Peter Williamson (1730–1799). As historian Richard Hofstadter pointed out, "Although efforts were made to regulate or check their activities, and they diminished in importance in the eighteenth century, it remains true that a certain small part of the white colonial population of America was brought by force, and a much larger portion came in response to deceit and misrepresentation on the part of the spirits [recruiting agents]."[7]

Indentures could not marry without the permission of their owner, were subject to physical punishment (like many young ordinary servants), and saw their obligation to labor enforced by the courts. To ensure uninterrupted work by the female servants, the law lengthened the term of their indenture if they became pregnant. But unlike slaves, servants were guaranteed to be eventually released from bondage. At the end of their term they received a payment known as "freedom dues" and become free members of society.[8] One could buy and sell indentured servants' contracts, and the right to their labor would change hands, but not the person as a piece of property.

    There's one for you sweetie

Btw, I like how you're marginalizing a horrible time in the world.

Both were terrible, call it slavery or indentured servitude, these people were held against their will, treated like shit. Sometimes forced to come over into this servitude, and raped.

Only an asshole would call it indentured servitude
