And he still wants to be back, and he'll continue to do give every ounce of effort to be back. His team (and his Achilles tendon) likely won't let that happen, though. That's not going to stop him from trying.

This will be a perfect example of why contracts should NOT be guaranteed. Either that or say a team signs a player and that team has say 4 months to take back the contract. Unless that player is healthy and playing of course.

They gave him the contract with full knowledge of his injury.... what are you talking about?

I'm just pointing out that contracts (Especially like this one) should not be guaranteed.

Teams should have an option. If it doesn't work out they aren't fucked for years.

Cuban gave Matthews that contract. He overpaid to get Matthews to go there. He deserves to be fucked for years if Wes doesn't work out.

Teams can offer partially guaranteed contracts. Cuban chose not to.

I thought it was an odd move on Cuban's part. Throw the max at a guy coming of an injury that might make him a spot up shooter.

Someone took a risk on him, words or no words. Whether he was coming back on opening day or not it was a risk regardless. Not everyone comes back from this injury... Cuban knew that. Cuban is not dumb with money.

Regardless of whether Wes comes back, that contract was the definition of "dumb with money." Wes is not a max player. Not even close. It was a desperation move by Cuban.

So the player should be penalized for an owner taking a chance at him? Why is that the players fault exactly? This doesn't help the owners' case of non-guaranteed contracts.

    He's a billionaire, I don't feel bad for him. So there's that.

Teams do have the option. The Mavs could've signed him to a max unguaranteed contract. They chose to make it fully guaranteed.

Wes did end up with a max contract but only because DeAndre backed out of his deal. When the Mavs offered Wes a contract DeAndre had committed to sign there. At that time the Mavs told Wes they'd give him all the money they had the ability to pay him. It only ended up being a max contract when DeAndre left and the Mavs had additional cap space.

So DeAndre double fucked the Mavs; he left them and it made Wes' contract far more expensive.

I'm happy for Wes, that's the bottom line. I have serious doubts about how quickly he should return to full contact basketball and honestly believe he'll lose a step or two when he can play a full game. I also believe he'll never give up.

When all is said and done, Dallas will be thrilled they signed Wes.

You're assuming that he is able to come back and be the same guy.

True . . . You said "It's a definite maybe" when asked "if Christmas was a realistic date for Matthews' return." Then you said, "It could be sooner. It's hard to say."

My thread title only said "Wes not ready - Maybe by Christmas" All the rest seemed too long for a thread title . . .
