I'm guessing they have but I'll bet Rasta could name a few from overseas

Yeah there have been a number of players who only played a couple years of organized basketball before the NBA; Michael Olowakandi, Bismack Biyombo, Tyrus Thomas, Joel Embiid. Probably some others. I can't think of a good one.

Nedzad Sinanovic didn't quite make a roster, but there was a guy with little basketball background. Freeland didn't have much, either, IIRC (at least not at the time we drafted him).

Yi Jian Lian only had a couple years in China. Dante Exum was hidden away in Australia.

At least Montero doesn't have years of bad habits on the court to shake

Yeah except for the Junior year where he played varsity; or the sophmore year he played JV, or when he played on the freshman team as a freshman. Other than those four years he never played.

Of the guys that barely made the cut I'm most intrigued by Cliff Alexander.

    He's a bit of a physical oddity: 6'8" with a 9'2" reach

He has a long way to go. But his rebounding and defense has a lot of potential.

Did I miss something? Admittedly, I didn't read the article that was linked, but I don't think Cliff necessarily "barely" made the cut....

I dig what the Blazers are doing with Montero and Alexander. It's like drafting a shortstop in the 37th round and trying to turn him into a pitcher. Probably won't work, but if it does you are playing with house money.

I agree with this on some level, though Cliff Alexander doesn't quite fit this mold. He's more like the guy that killed it through everything, went to Cape Cod League and was a bit of a head case and at times struggled with the wood bat and his position tanked, and the Blazers identified the issues and are going to try to fix them.

Alexander isn't a head case at all though.

Headcase describes a large crowd of people. Probably not the best use with Alexander, but he's made a few questionable decisions, in the eyes of coaches, scouts, etc. Guys get labeled that all the time, and it's probably not the best descriptor. But there's some smoke to it, in the eyes of some, anyway.

I love that we have him on our roster. Could be big. When Stotts said not to worry about him, I could be reading into it, but I think he feels like they got a steal in signing him as a free agent.
