Recent events in my life have me feeling like I may need protection. What would you recommend?

Hilarious... you prove my point that the main reason why guns are purchased:

    Fear

There will never be a time that I need to own a gun. I have no enemies and the only entity that I fear is the police.

Asked around the office here--as you might imagine there are a few guys here that know a thing or two about weapons.

Two recommend the M&P Shield 9mm. It's a full-size round in a .380 body. They tell me that, if you have a friend in the military or law enforcement, you can get it for $299. You can also configure it a couple of different ways (for instance, you can choose whether having a safety or not is right for you). A number of people have done the Apex trigger upgrade, which removes really the only "con" for the weapon (gritty trigger). Extremely smooth, short reset, less than $100 for a gunsmith to install.

Takes too long to reload, and the backblast area extends back into the people you're probably trying to protect. Ammo's also expensive as shit.

Ruger lc9 is my carry gun. Has a laser on trigger guard and whole package is small enough to fit in a pocket. Only draw back to some is the double action trigger but to me that's like an added safety.

I just shot the m&p shield mentioned above. It felt great and shot pretty damn good but it's normally close to $700 on sale down here for $450 so if there is any truth to that $299 number id definitely consider it.

Springfield armory xdm is great you can get a compact or sub compact frame.

And of course glock 19 (though im not a glock fan mainly because I dont like popular things and like to be different, there's no denying it's a great gun)

As far as people only buying guns out of fear I beg to differ. I bought my first gun cause target practicing was fun, little rugged 10/.22 then I got a shotgun cause clays were fun. Then I got my Springfield xdm .40 cause I wanted to learn to shoot pistol. Then got my ruger lc9 cause the store was out of .40 rounds and i figured it would make a good carry gun. Then I got my Remington 700 .270 cause I want to eat deer meat rather than the processed garbage beef we get at Wal-Mart. No fear at all in my purchases. :-)

The shield is a very common and reliable conceal carry gun.

LOL are you drunk? It's not all sunshine and rainbows outside dude. People are not all law abiding citizens.

At any rate, MP shield, SRC9, glock19, LCP flavors, diamond back db9.

Geez! That is fucked up! Go down and have a chat with your police chief, you might find he is a man. I just talked with mine three days ago, smart man. Even though Sly doesn't agree with his or my take.

You aren't black and you don't live in Portland. One size does not fit all...

I don't agree with your belief that people should be allowed to hand out guns to anyone they want and I'm sure if we were to present that to your police chief he would agree with me.

If it is perfectly ok for MarAzul to hand out guns to the neighbors every time the wind blows or a dog barks, then it is perfectly ok for SlyPokerDog to hand out automatic weapons to a few dozen gangbangers if they feel they need a bit more firepower.
