Im on the west side of town looking for a company that does good basic roof maintenance (gutter cleaning, moss removal) and was wondering if any of you resourceful Blazer fans had a company you have used and would recommend. Quality of work is more important than cost to me, thanks in advance!

    1. Move to Vegas.
    2. Buy new house with concrete tile roof.
    3. Get old and maybe die before it ever needs anything.

Roof Life Of Oregon comes to mind. They may be a bit spendy but roofs are what they do. There are a lot of smaller outfits that may do it cheaper. The biggest thing you should be aware of is how they clean your roof. DO NOT let them pressure wash it! It looks great when they are done but it takes a real toll on the roof. The "right" way is to have them scrub it with a brush. Even if whoever you go with tells you they won't pressure wash, I'd recommend supervising them. I had one company tell me they scrubbed and I came home to find them pressure washing. Made a helluva mess too. Also, make sure you pay for (and receive) powdered moss control after they are done cleaning. There are a lot of outfits out there. Maybe check Angie's List and also make sure they are licensed and bonded. You don't want to foot the bill for some shyster clown falling off your roof.....

Good question. First question is what kind of roof do you have? Wood? Metal? Composite? Second, is what is the condition of the roof?

If the roof is composite and in good repair, and if all you need is gutter cleaning and moss removal, I would think you just hire some general labor. The way I get moss off my roofs is to sprinkle moss killer all over it, wait for it to die and then gently brush it off or hose it off. Cleaning gutters is even easier. Just make sure you get them 100% clean so nothing sticks to the inside. You can also clean them and then repaint the inside if you see any rough spots in the paint. Also, make sure they're sloped properly. Finally, if you only have 4" downspouts, it's worth the money to upgrade to 5" or even 6" if your gutters can take it.

It is composite and not very old so I would say it is in good condition. If that's the case I think I might as well go up and take care of it myself. I've cleaned my share of gutters over the years so I wouldn't have any problems with that. I was just more concerned about getting the moss off properly as I've heard if you don't do it right it is easy to damage the roofing.

Do you have a lot of trees overhanging your roof? The best way to get rid of moss is to cut back the trees.

There actually are a couple, and that is part of the plan as well, however I was planning on taking care of that myself.

I think I'll end up going to Home Depot and getting some moss killer and trying Maxies method.

The rule of thumb is not to have any branch within 10' of your roof. If you can cut all branches that overhang your roof so much the better.

I have a cheap, plastic tub, low pressure airless sprayer that isn't as aggressive as a pressure washer...load some bleach in the tank with water and gently spray the roof ...kills the moss really well.

Anyone ever thought about using a drone for this? I'm not sure it is feasible, but it might be fun to try?

I was thinking something similar yet different, like covering the roof with Syrian children.

That is actually a really interesting idea and I'm sure someone who is savvy enough could put together a device using a drone and something like what Riverman is talking about. I think you would still have to get up on the roof eventually, but only once to clear the dead moss.

The only problem with using bleach in a sprayer is that it eats up O rings, metal parts etc., and does so fairly quickly. So use an old or cheapy sprayer you don't mind trashing....

This is a good point...cleaning it and flushing the unit and gun right after using is important...I use a solution you can get at most paint stores...the one I use is a 50 dollar..2.5 gall.home model...not professional gear..it's on its 14 year and still works everytime..

I have one of these, which I figure are similar enough that it would work fine? Maybe a little less coverage I would assume.
