...yup, they essentially gave him away. Here's a youngster making the league minimum and who is under team control for 5 more years but unfortunately became a rule 5 casualty after TJ surgery.
...doesn't seem right to let someone go who was no worse than CC or Capuano et al. Tampa Bay got an absolute freebie...way to go, Brian.

It was out there plain to see (to some)- why this stupid ridiculous (rolling my eyes) move of exposing Ace Whitley to the rule 5 draft was made decided on.
Today 11/20 was the deadline to place players on the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft later this winter, and that resulted in the Yankees adding three deserving minor players to the major league roster.

The Yankees signed RHP Johnny Barbato 22, RHP Rookie Davis 22, and OFBen Gamel 23 to a major league contract and placed them on the 40-man roster. The Yankees cleared a roster spot this afternoon when the Rays claimed RHP Chase Whitley off waivers.

Barbato had a good season with both the Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton Wilkes Barre, going 6-2 with a 2.67 ERA in 67.1 innings. While Barbato made the jump to Triple-A, Davis was promoted to Double-A over the course of the 2015 season, going 8-7 with a 3.86 ERA in 130.2 innings between Single-A and Double-A. Gamel had a career year in the minor leagues, hitting .300/,358/.472 in 129 games with the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Whitley 26 yrs old, will be 27 in June, coming off TJ won't be ready for season opening.....career 5.02 ERA, 1.44 WHIP..

If one the those three were exposed and lost while Ace Whitley was "protected" you would also be ridiculing "the plan", and Cashman.
By the way, which of the FOUR do you believe are also the least viable valuable trade chips- Barbato,Gamel, Davis or Ace Whitley?
    Lmao

It never ends.....sometimes this is hilarious!

...gee, I can't imagine who that was probably directed at.

...lemme guess, more sunshine and lollipops for the Yanx and gleefully fellating Cashman ?

...hhhhhow cccould Trashman leave Ace (rehabbing from TJ surgery, career 5.02 ERA, 1.44WHIP) Whitley unprotected while choosing to add instead those other three 22-23yr olds who preformed well at AA-AAA to the 40 man roster? Hhhhow could hhhhe ddddo such a thing?
Will the Republic survive? .....this is tttttotaly out of ssssstep with the pppppppppplaaaaaaaaaaaaan.......

Lemme guess, you would've preferred he protected Whitley instead of any of those other three younger healthier, better performing players?

    Ace Whitley
    Barbato
    Davis
    Gamel
    ?

Yep, you have it ALL figured out.

    Isn't this funny stuff?

Quite okay Rick, I understand, what else could you possibly say after choosing to sign up in agreement that this was somehow the worse(?), a bad(?), an irresponsible(?) move by leaving Ace Whitley exposed to the rule 5 draft while choosing instead to add those other three YOUNGER, HEALTHIER, BETTER PERFORMING as we speak- players.
What else could you say? Lol

Jmho....maybe we should wait at least until Cashman trades one of THOSE three players for a mediocre 30 year old before we wheel out the usual knee-jerk reaction?

    Nevermind. No use.

I hope this move of leaving Ace Whitley unprotected doesn't come back and bite the Yanks in the ass like the Shane Greene manuever.
