True, and we have had this convo before, but they were indentured servants. Not allowed to eat or buy things from restaurants and stores. And the way the employers would get out of letting the servants go, was by raping the women and getting them pregnant. Then saying the offspring was now a servant for 18 years, so the mother would have to stay with her child and never actually be free

 

If you're working for barely earning enough for basic food and shelter vs working and given shelter and food then those two conditions are the same in that respect.

My dad's ancestors were forced to live on Spanish Missions later run by the Mexicans. During the gold rush they were enslaved to find gold, or just flat out killed to make room.
