You can say that about any play Al. Go for it on 4th and 15 and you can say if you execute the play yada yada yada. Is was a terrible decision and there is no way to argue it. Kick the FG, keep the mo, pay off a 9 minute drive, and force the Jets to get 2 TD's to win...not just a FG and a TD to tie.
All about risk/reward, and if Coughlin weighed that out during the TO the decision is to kick the FG. The reward is 99% you end the game if you get a TD there. The risk is way greater when you factor in mo, and only needing 10 points, and not paying off a 9 minute drive with any points. Giants kick a FG there and the Jets have no life. MAYBE they drive the field twice and score 2 TD's to win...possible but not probable. FG gives the Giants a 13 point lead and the Jets stay lifeless as the Giants just took 9 + minutes off the clock and scored points. Stopping the Giants there on 4th and 2 (not 4th and inches or a 1/2 yard) is the only way the Jets get life at that point and get fired up by the D to get things going. Risk/reward says you must kick the FG there. Keep the mo, and don't allow the Jets to only need to get to the 35 yard line for one of the two scores they need since one could be a FG if you get stopped on 4th down.
The jets drive down the field both times, that's on rhe defense. Its not like they tird it on a 52 yrd field goal and a hail mary at the end of the game. 100% the Giants D is awful, you will get no argument from me. BUT that is even more reason not to potentially give the Jets mo by going for it AND give the Jets the chance to tie it with a TD and a FG rather than needing 2 TD's. If I don't trust my D I say I need to pay off this drive with points and give the Jets no life AND I need to force the Jets to score 2 TD's and not get an easier road by only needing a FG as one of their scores. But everyone is entitled to their opinions of course. I would say if the Giants kick a FG though I don't think we are having this discussion after a Giants win because there would be nothing to discuss about a ho hum win.

Agreed. If the Jets never get the mo they got off a 4th down stop they don't score 2 TD's IMO. As it was they only scored 10 points not 13 and that is with the life they got from getting the stop. All good. Most people think it was a terrible decision and Coughlin has been ripped for it this week, but no doubt the Giants D does stink, so yeah the Jets could have scored 2 TD's and won anyway...certainly possible.
