Here's a team that clearly is trying to win. Big players in Free Agency. Signed and kept the best manager with a track record. Not "I'll play these" by any stretch. They upgraded at 2nd base, center field, and added two quality pitchers. If they don't win it all, you cannot fault them for trying. They obviously are trying. I'll take trying and failing over not trying (hard) and failing.
Cubs have built a powerhouse. They tanked, which helped land guys like Bryant and Schwarber on young player deals. They made cagey trades landing Aritetta and Rizzo. They spend some money and went for it how with Heyward, Zobrist and now Lester. Still no world series of course but you have to admire having a plan and executing on it. Still no world series though.
Nothing is ever promised, no matter how great a team you build. All you can do is give your best effort.
