By far the most ignorant comment you've ever made.

Well, I'm curious, how would you deal with gentrification? The city worked so hard promoting 20 minute neighborhoods, biking, and mass transit, it's only natural that people would move to areas where those things are prevalent. As Portland grows, and people want to live closer to downtown, that's just a natural side effect of the urbanization of our region. So while I understand the frustration with people being pushed out of their neighborhoods, that's not limited to minorities. Lots of young people can't afford to buy homes in Portland. I saw something in the Oregonian that said that of the 45,000 homes that were built in the 2000's, 40,000 are rentals. It's rich people buying up properties and turning them into rentals. So how would you stop this from happening?

Well, instead of insulting the man, why don't you tell us what we should take from your open ended comment?

The thing that he fails to realize, is that people are being displaced all over Portland. It's not just people from North Portland. It's not just black people.

I was born in SW Portland. I was raised there. My parents were born in SW Portland. My grandparents were born in SW Portland. I cannot afford to buy a house in that area right now. The house that I was renting from my parents previously was purchased for $15,000 in the late 70's. That house is currently worth $300k. It's a shitty little 750 square foot house with a 750 square foot basement. I bought a 1600 square foot house out in Hillsboro for $265,000. That's the current housing situation in Portland. It's not just NE or N Portland. It's everywhere in Portland. People can't afford to buy, and rent is climbing out of control. The housing situation in Portland is unlike anything we've ever seen in this city. He just wants to act like it's only affecting him and people he knows, but that's not true. It's affecting everyone who was born in this city.

I know. The pot has been cooking for years now. The boundaries of Portland (growth Boundaries) changes little as the population grows. Mean while the State continues to make it more difficult to built a home even for the owner, on land anywhere in the State, outside these artificially constained boundaries of the cities. There is only one result to be expected.

It's good and it's bad. On the one hand we have a vibrant city center that's thriving. That's good. If we hadn't cut down on sprawl we would be in a similar predicament as Phoenix or Houston.

It's bad because, as we grow, there's a finite amount of land, and we're still dealing with sprawl. The biggest issue is that our law makers, in their infinite wisdom, saw the writing on the wall and did nothing to alleviate the congestion. Our roadways were not built to handle this size of population, and the pathetic public transit system that they built with billions of dollars isn't even denting the rapid growth. Still, they do nothing. So people are forced to move out to Hillsboro, and Gresham, and Salem, and still commute into Portland for work. It's only going to get worse.

You really post some dumb assumptive shit sometimes. Nobody said it was only black people being gentrified. But if you want to burn that strawman go ahead and do it.

Did I say that you did? I'm talking in general, but go ahead and make personal attacks without evening addressing the point of my post.

Oh, and by the by, you said "She could easily be from where we've been gentrified to...."

Which "we" were you referring to kemosabe? Native Portlanders?

And that wasn't a personal attack. I was specifically referring to some of the posts that you make as being dumb and assumptive.

The first part of that sentence was addressed at you. That people are being displaced all over Portland.

That's the thing about a "period," it means the sentence is over. It's done. You chose to attribute the other two sentences to your post.

What's funny is to me is that I'm making a comment on the other ignorant comment stating that she was from NEP. That's why I made a snarky comment in the first place.

I was expanding on the point, that it's not just one area that's being gentrified, and adding that it's not just one demographic. It wasn't meant as a personal insult or an attack. You chose to take it that way.

Folks won't get displaced if they buy a home. Solves the problem. Renting is and always has been a crap shoot. If you're a local and want to keep Portland that way, beat the Californians to the punch and invest in the city.
