The cable news channel Al Jazeera America, which debuted in 2013 to great fanfare when it promised to cover American news soberly and seriously, will be shutting down by the end of April. The move was announced at a companywide meeting on Wednesday.

In a memo to the staff, Al Jazeera America’s chief executive, Al Anstey, said the “decision by Al Jazeera America’s board is driven by the fact that our business model is simply not sustainable in light of the economic challenges in the U.S. media marketplace.”

They should have gone with a better name. I think people still negatively associate the name with mooslumbs.

That and it was, at best, a JV MSNBC. Current (the channels name before AJ bought it) was powered by a hamster, and shot through a potato. I'm not sure they improved it much from that.

I liked it and watched it a lot. News not america centric. Extremely well done documentaries. Money devoted to journalism over other interests.

Shoot! I watch Al Jazeera a bit every night. It seems they don't know left from right and just lay it out there for you to pick up, which ever end first.

I liked their news site, and their chan. But I agree, the name could have been better.
