I'd think you just immediately buy out Lee. He doesn't even get on a plane to Portland

The $7 million savings in the example in the OP would have been shared by our players, so they get screwed out of it.

To a young team with many of the players on rookie contracts, that extra money could be significant at this point in their careers.

Kaman and/or Frazier would be the sensible choice I suppose.

Ahhh, understood ( again). That makes sense. If the player never gets to Portland, than you do it. There is no down side.

Except for pissing off the players already on the team who don't get that extra $13M distributed amongst them...

But somehow if we put a2nd rounder in it's ok? Most say no they need an asset. That eliminates that money from the players as well. Each player had their salary their entitled to. I doubt any are making investment plans with the other chunk of Paul's money

That would be the only downfall I suppose.

Great point. Contracts are contracts and the players are all professional enough to understand this I would hope.

You do it if you can build up assets for the future. But either way the money going leave Paul wallet.

    No.

Players should be rewarding for playing well with extra money!

I am fine either way they decide to go. Don't think this is the plan though.

We have seen a couple of deals where teams have made money. Portland could have done this but has chosen not to. We did the Miller deal since it netted us two draft picks. I think Neil wants to gain assets. If we cannot get anything but can make a few million at the deadline without giving up anything, I have no problem with it.

If Neil can save money, I say go for it. I don't think he should squeeze the nickels, but I don't think he should spend money he doesn't need to. The players signed the contracts they signed. They'll get what's owed them, what they negotiated for. I don't think the CBA allows the team to pay bonuses if they wanted to.

I wish the NBA would let incentive contracts in like the NFL.
Player of the week? $1o,ooo bonus. Player of the month, $100,00 bonus. MVP, $1,000,000 bonus. Average over 20pts per game for the season another $1,000,000 bonus.
Lead the team in rebounds? $500,000 bonus. Etc.

Or something like that. I don't think we would ever see lazy play like Nico again.

They do allow similar bonuses. Joakim Noah earned one for his DPOY and 1st team all nba season. The bulls were so scared of paying the LT, they did a salary dump in anticipation of Taj Gibson earning a bonus for 6MOY.

EDIT: to clarify, the Bulls cut Erik Murphy and the Jazz owed them a "favor" so they picked him up, getting the Bulls under the LT.

I dont understand why incentive based contracts aren't used more often then.

I think they might be common. Very few guys actually earn those incentive bonuses.

Jazz do Bulls a favor by claiming Murphy
Rookie's salary-cap number comes off books and club stays on track to add veteran help

WASHINGTON — Players and coaches weren't the only ones happy that the Jazz claimed Erik Murphy off waivers Saturday evening.

Bulls management had to be ecstatic as well.

Beyond the well-liked rookie staying in the NBA, Murphy's cap number of $490,180 comes off the Bulls' books. That would keep the Bulls out of the luxury tax even if Joakim Noah makes first-team All-NBA and earns a $500,000 bonus.

There's a set limit of how much of a contract could be likely and unlikely incentives.
