http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Brandon-Roy-343/ "Defense: A bit lackadaisical at times defensively, possibly due to the amount of responsibility he’s forced to shoulder on the other end, as well as the heavy amount of minutes he plays. Has great size at close to 6-7 in shoes, albeit an average wingspan (6-8), and is smart and athletic enough to make a solid impact here when he puts his mind to it. Knows how to get down in a fundamental stance and contain his matchup, but doesn’t always have the length to contest every shot. Adding a bit of strength could help him, as he’s susceptible to being bumped off his spot and isn’t quite always physical enough to fight back when being posted up. Has really nice timing, knows the scouting report and can make things difficult when it’s time to buck down and get a stop. Contributes on the glass as well."
And Dame/CJ compared on this site which I found fairly interesting.... http://www.blazersedge.com/2015/7/2...um-on-defense-compared-to-top-pgs-courtesy-of
Just to watch play might be Roy because I loved his spin moves through traffic but for the whole team concept I pick Dame.
I think Roy was lazy on D cause the team needed his offense (we were a stout defensive team) since the only other players that he had that could get their own shot during his tenure were Outlaw, at times Rudy, Miller and Wallace briefly. LA wasn't a guy you could dump the ball to at the time.
Me too. Roy was all about Roy and was as loyal as a cat. Dame is all about loyalty and team. Roy was also about the ISO Roy offense. Again, Dame is more about team offense. Damian all day every day for me.
I think that's a bullshit notion. Roy was a MUCH better defender that Dame. Injuries turned him into a lazy defender. Before the injuries Roy was a good defender. Do you not remember the 10th game of "The Streak" when he won the game by blocking Carmelo's shot in the post?
I agree Roy was a capable defender. I also think he tended to coast on defense and save himself for the fourth quarter.
He was a great on court distribute and general of the offense, but he was by no means an off the court leader like Dame, verbally or physically. Loved Porter and he was just as good of a captain, but not a leader. Bit of a difference I think . Porter never had to deal with developing a bunch of young rooks.
If we got to keep CJ I'd go for Roy. Otherwise, I'd go for Lillard. You really need an excellent three point shooter in the modern NBA. Besides, Lillard's game is just much more easy to fit other players into. He doesn't dominate the ball as much, and he spreads the floor with just the threat of his three point shot. Damian scores a lot more, but Roy did it much more efficiently at their respective peaks: http://www.basketball-reference.com...=roybr01&y2=2016&p2=lillada01&p3=&p4=&p5=&p6= Of course, this question asks us to completely disregard Roy's greatest liability--health. Even in their first three seasons (when Roy was "healthy") Damian logged over 1700 more minutes in the regular seasons, scored 800 more points and racked up over 400 more assists. You can be the greatest player in the world, but if you aren't on the court you aren't doing any good. After all the injuries Portland has endured over the years, the "Iron Man" aspect of our superstar Damian can't be so easily ignored.
I liked your post and agree with most of it. But would like to expand on the quoted topic. I wish this was true, the CP3 affect. Not only being able play with any style of player, but as a PG, make the other players better. But so far, Dame has not done this. Arron Afflalo played for two new teams last season. He had better stats playing next to Denver’s Ty Lawson then he had playing next to Dame. This season, Arron improved his stats playing next to NY’s Jose Calderon over his stats playing next to Dame. It appears, over the last 5+ seasons, Arron had his worst stretch of games playing next to Dame. A similar case can be made for Gerald Henderson playing better off of Kemba Walker than next to Dame. Harkless looks like a push so far.
That's fair enough. I don't think CJ seems to play up to his potential next to him either. This is an issue for Roy as well, though. Andre Miller couldn't hit threes, so the coach was loath to put him next to Roy. Jarret Jack was a bad fit as well. Ball-dominant guards who aren't pass-first are always going to be trickier to pair effectively, I guess. Kobe, Harden, Jordan, Iverson, Curry....a lot of them seem to maximize their potential playing beside spot up specialists in the back court. It's why I think trading CJ is pretty much inevitable.
No I don't remember that game because I was 13 and didn't have CSN at the time. I never thought of Roy as bad, I just thought of him as conservative defender as he had to expend so much energy offensively. I'm not saying he was Harden.
Wait a minute though. Thats not fair enough. BOth of fishermans reference were of players who started out playing next to Dame in out of the ordinary situations. Arron didnt come here and start next to Dame and it wasnt the intent. Wes went down and he was thrust into the starting linup and If I recall played decent until he too got injured and was never the same because he didnt fully recover before coming back on court. Henderson came to us in the middle of a hip surgery that took longer than expect to recover and because of that I think he hit the floor less than 100% as well. Hendo has looked much better now that he has got his game legs back under him. I dont think either case has anything to do with Dame elevating or deflating the players around him., but more of unusual circumstance. I think Dame is more of a distributer at this point in his career than Roy was in his respective career. Number one reason he is easier to build around/team up with.
How can you explain Batum now playing so much better with Kemba Walker than he did for 3 seasons with Dame? How can you explain Wil Barton exploding in Denver while playing with two different PGs and struggled while playing with Dame? Name one player that played better with Dame than he did playing with another PG. If Dame makes other players so much better, why did all of our FA vets leave without saying goodbye last summer? Players like to play with a pg that can make them better and help them succeed. Players love to play with CP3. Dame is great with his offense, but I am not convinced that his style of play helps to make other players better, and may even curtail their production and development.
