https://www.pcc.edu/about/diversity/cascade/whiteness-history-month/ Not surprisingly, this is causing quite a stir. Probably important to understand how "whiteness" is being defined before commenting on this. Have fun guys...
These universities have been on a real racialissues kick lately. Not surprising though, when I started at osu in the mid 2000's I had never felt shameful to be white until took some ethnic studies classes. They just go the wrong way in trying to show white privilege exists. I agree that it does, but not in the way some people try to push it. Watch this video, but be forewarned. Some of the thoughts expressed in the video I think are too right winged. And some of the comments might have been taken out of context. But really? Some of these kids want "whites not allowed" spaces on campus? Isn't that intentional segregation?
And this is why I vote no to increase PCC funding on my property taxes every time it comes up. Fuck that school, and fuck this reverse racism white shaming bullshit. All these courses do is promote and foster hatred and segregation; evidence easily found via what JFizzle brought and other material spewed online. It's a damn shame and does not help real racism in this country one bit.
I didn't take any ethnic studies classes when I took college classes, but I took a Native studies class in high school and it didn't have any of this stuff in that class, what has happened the past decade? Is it just because I'm from a more rural, conservative place where this stuff would be laughed out of the room?
Gill Coliseum! I vividly remember when I had the "Privilege" of playing in my first basketball game there. It sucks to see it use and abuse with this tripe.
Wow.... so they're basically saying that being "white" is a behavior..... so are they saying that Black people can be "white?" Can Asians be "white?" This crap helps to reinforce stereotypes. They're achieving the opposite of what they're hoping to achieve.
THANK YOU! that's the problem with school. Teach the kids the truth so we can be a part of the change. I had no idea how bad Portland used to be until I watched the documentary Lift ev'ry voice. Ron Herndon is a special man.
I took "American Cultures". I couldn't believe I was paying to listen to that bullshit. Only plus was those classes had hot girls in them. Oh and you never had to read anything, it was all just writing fluffy opinions on what you think the teacher wants to hear. Really easy A.
I think it's stupid mostly because they are just inventing definitions that don't actually exist. Teach a class on imperialism, a class on the KKK, a class on how Civil Rights affected the majority, there are tons of ways to approach this subject, but to say white is a frame of mind if fucked. So I certainly don't share any of those ideals, does that mean I'm not white? That all being said, I have attended several colleges including UO, PCC and PSU and have never had to take a course like the ones people are bitching about. Electives fucker! You aren't going to be forced to Black Expectations, Women of Indonesia or The Hell with Christ. Classes similar to those might exist here or there, but they are going to be electives and are generally meant to provide an exploratory context. Lot's of bullshit in those classes as well as just about every field. College is partially to learn information and partially to get you to extend your boundaries and think about subjects in new ways. Don't want that, go to trade school. That's what I'm doing right now and I'm loving it. I take all sorts of coursework that directly relates to winemaking. But that's a different thing altogether.
In the next-to-last paragraph, the PCC site refers to "graduate students from PCC." Is a community college's graduate student the same as a 4-year college's Junior? If they substituted the word "whiteness" with "Western civilization" it wouldn't be noticed.
Some minorities are really in love with this pathetic self-pity. And at the same time, hold racist views of white people as their oppressor. Oh well...can't control what anyone thinks....but don't try to share your bullshit on a platform of "education". It's disgraceful that this shit is being hosted by a university.
You understand there is a difference between studying the history of how Irish people were loathed, and whining about it today, or using it as an excuse as to why you're a loser. And going around telling non Irish people about how they are your oppressor won't win you any friends, it'll just make them think you're stupid. And that passive aggressive shit doesn't improve racial relations, it makes it worse.
A class promoting racial ignorance and hatred by creating mythical conspiratorial enemies supposedly subconciously ingrained in caucasian people's minds... Meanwhile, few college students know how to file their own taxes or raise their children in a safe and healthy manner. The world has never had a majority of caucasians. Worldwide, caucasians have always been an obvious minority throughout history. The fact that they have outpaced all other races in technological and societal advancement suggests that their current place in the world was earned largely on merit, intelligence, and cooperation.
