The Blazers need to pick the best player on the board at whatever position when (if) they pick in this draft. Ideally, that's a 3-4-5, because they can get better at all those spots. But I'd even pick Dunn or Hield, honestly, if that's the most talented prospect available.

IMO, drafting strictly for need usually gets you into trouble. Drafting the best talent makes you better. You can always trade your extras for help at another position in the future.

I remember when our best player was Jim Paxson. We still drafted a kid named Clyde Drexler. That worked out pretty well.

In theory I agree with you. Especially if the player is a lot better than the next option. Forget the need and take him. I know I said I wanted a SF but I definitely would take the best player available. But it has to be by a decisive amount IMO

Yeah, definitely. I think need is a tiebreaker. I think if you have a glaring need at one position and you have a player slightly above him at another position, you go for the need. But if you have a potential all-star talent and a solid player at the need position, I'd rather draft the all-star talent and trade from your strength to get an all-star talent at your need position.

Buddy Hield looks taller than 6'4 . That guy has NBA moves. Can he swing over to SF?

He's averaging 26pts on 50/50/90 shooting. One thing I always look at for college players is if they can get easy shots. He gets all the defensive attention, and yet gets himself easy looks because he can dribble to any place on the court that he wants. That skill translates.

By draft time, I don't see him dropping past #5 if these GMs do their homework.

Right now the ones I have seen that I would be interested in is:
    Simmons
    Ingram
    Dunn
    Valentine
    Davis from Michigan st
    Sabonis

I kinda like the numbers Troy Williams at Indiana is putting up.

    12.8 PPG / 6.8 RPG / 2.2 APG / 1.1 BPG / 1.4 SPG / 3.0 TOPG (downside)

    .557/.370/.655

He is 6'7, 215 and plays SF.

I also still really like Dwayne Bacon as a prospect, kinda has a Shabazz Muhammad game which would really fit nicely.

He could be a legitimate late bloomer or he could be a senior beating up on youngsters.

I get a Tony Delk vibe from Hield.

Stylistically, Hield reminds me a bit of Wesley Matthews. Moves and shoots a lot like him.

Wesley does not have that handle, though

This. I think the Wes comparison is actually pretty good, but Hield has more upside because he's a lot more fluid dribbling and a bit more athletic. He's not going to make a living at the next level driving through traffic to the hoop, but the way he shoots it and forces teams to overplay his shot, he will be able to get himself to the hoop for buckets a couple of times a game.

You said Wes was a good comparison but then brought up the reasons why he's actually not. Hield is quicker, has more bounce, a way better ball handler and a craftier finisher around the rim while not being the defender or post player Wes was. The player Hield reminds me most of is a smaller Paul George (offensively at least).

Enjoying watching Skal and Kentucky on ESPN right now. He's starting to get his confidence back. His jump shot looks very smooth, very fluid.

Guys, how do we know if we retain our Pick that NO isnt gonna use it in a trade? say, Pick + Hendo/ Kaman for.....?
We just draft him and trade him. Draft the player the other team wants. Thats legal right?

I really think that is the case because of how many young lotto picks we already have. Do we need another project? Or should we use the pick as leerage for that second star? Could we use e pick, as a sign and trade and then do the same thing with Leonard, so we could trade the pick/Leonard and Hendo for a star? Maybe toss in Harkless if needed? Something like that? NOt sure of the star...

You lost me at "toss in Harkless" I'd personally rather "toss in" Aminu.
