The solar system appears to have a new ninth planet. Today, two scientists announced evidence that a body nearly the size of Neptune—but as yet unseen—orbits the sun every 15,000 years. During the solar system’s infancy 4.5 billion years ago, they say, the giant planet was knocked out of the planet-forming region near the sun. Slowed down by gas, the planet settled into a distant elliptical orbit, where it still lurks today.

The claim is the strongest yet in the centuries-long search for a “Planet X” beyond Neptune. The quest has been plagued by far-fetched claims and even outright quackery. But the new evidence comes from a pair of respected planetary scientists, Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, who prepared for the inevitable skepticism with detailed analyses of the orbits of other distant objects and months of computer simulations. “If you say, ‘We have evidence for Planet X,’ almost any astronomer will say, ‘This again? These guys are clearly crazy.’ I would, too,” Brown says. “Why is this different? This is different because this time we’re right.”

And I'm sure Denny will say this is some scientist agenda.

This has been going on for a century. After the real Neptune was discovered, astronomers calculated that a large planet must be beyond that, to account for the known orbits. When they discovered Pluto, they said that its mass is way too small. There must be a bigger one beyond.

A 15,000 year orbit compared to Pluto's 240 year one is 60 times as much. If it exists, it's so far out that it won't be detected any time soon.

Every year some new prediction about this comes up. Same for the annual new Amelia Earhart theory that makes the headlines annually since she crashed. They found a crappy old shoe on an island that might be WW2-era!

    PLANET NINE COMMITS TO ALABAMA

In a move that came somewhat of a surprise, newly discovered Planet Nine has committed to play football at Alabama. The massive celestial body, which goes by Nibiru with its other planet friends and also A'Shawn Robinson, would be the first planet to play football by our reckoning.

Coming from a cold region of deep space beyond the Kuiper Belt, Planet Nine has a mass of approximately 10 times that of the Earth, but displays exceptional athleticism while moving through space. "I think it's a real testament to Nibiru that it can cover that kind of ground while maintaining a solar orbit somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 Earth years," said Alabama head coach Nick Saban, all while committing an NCAA violation for discussing an unsigned prospect.

"That's the kind of commitment that we look for here at Alabama, a commitment to putting in the work and getting better every day over many millennia."

The planetary commitment ceremony was lightly covered by traditional media for obvious reasons related to interplanetary travel limitations, but we were able to obtain a video clip of Saban taking the big phone call from the planet.

The planet was unrated by all the major scouting services, but has all the measurables that speak to an easy translation to the FBS level. The only real concern would be that an object that massive coming that close to Earth would cause a cataclysmic event that would undoubtedly wipe out all human life. In that sense, it's easy to see why Nibiru is such a good fit in Tuscaloosa.

Saban also said that he was happy to find someone a little outside the Crimson Tide's traditional recruiting footprint.

"We work every day to try to find the best players that are the best fit for the program. We'll go anywhere we need to to find the right player. I'd like to keep expanding our scouting radius beyond the cold reaches of deep space and maybe start hitting those hard-to-reach places like Indiana."

Despite the lack of a recruiting reputation or anything in the way of game tape, this has to be considered a win for Alabama. They're rolling on the recruiting trail after winning their fourth championship in the past seven years, and that's the kind of profile you need if you're going to have an entire planet eating up blockers as a true nose tackle.

Attempts to contact Nibiru were unreturned, but my home printer turned on at 4 a.m. last night and printed 34 pages about the earth's poles shifting while ending with "Roll Tide."

Mike Brown, the Cal Tech astronomer who keeps finding things beyond Pluto, loves to toot his horn. When asked about anything, he praises himself. He makes Trump look humble.

This time, Brown calculated something without finding it, then couldn't find it, and his numbers showed only a very general idea of where it supposedly is, rendering it unfindable by others, too. The only reason that writers wrote articles is that he praised himself all over the internet.

My theory is that Mike Brown and Sly invented this to jack up ratings on this board and Brown's blogs. Cal Tech will give Brown a raise, and Denny will pay Sly another fat cigar. Denny is such a sucker for science hoaxes.

I won't have time tonight, staying awake to look at the Sun through my telescope and humming the Doors' acidic "Waiting for the Sun," but one of you guys should check all of Mike Brown's peer-reviewed journal papers to see whether he listed Sly or Denny among his collaborators. There must be a payoff somewhere, possibly thriving one meter beneath the Martian surface.

Why, is there something 1 meter below the permafrost that you want to tell me about?

By the way, notice how hard it is to read numerals in the font you've chosen for the board? When I type basketball statistics, they hide among the letters. What is your fixation on small digits? How about using a font with humongous digits?

But this year set a record for warmest temperature in history. You remember permafrost back in the 60s, but now you rake the leaves in shorts and a t-shirt.

    What's this permafrost excuse?
