The Rays just picked up Dickerson from the Rockies for next to nothing, I think this kid is going to be a real good one, I know we've got a full outfield but no way I would have let this kid go unnoticed.

...can't believe the Rays stole this kid from the Rockies...Cashman could have made this deal...I'd take Dickerson over anyone we have in the minors ...and he's been touted as a "future batting title winner"...his stroke is that good.

After seeing this kid go by unnoticed by the Yankees I'm convinced that Cashman has blinders on.

I can see how silly those moves could look on face value.
    Understandable.

However, while Montero was considered a good C prospect, there were rumblings about HIS attitude but putting that aside, the Yanks did trade him for a (then) 25 yr old SP who was an all star when he was 22 yrs old and they knew they also had Murphy waiting in the wings.

And speaking of Murphy, whether or not we agree with the trade (Hicks), the Yanks (and I agree) they had a chance to pick up a physically talented 26 yr old Outfielder/CF who is widely considered an excellent defender who has done very well vs LHP while also "improving" a bit vs RHP in 2015 when he had his most playing time (ABs).......and coupled with Sanchez on the cusp of being ready to make the big club, it wasn't exactly the end of the world (imo) trading Murphy who himself batted .277 last year with 4 HRs in 155 ABs.

And the obvious question now is what Sanchez does a d how the Yanks handle him. They could start him at AAA for a couple of months and in the meantime let Romine be a place holder.

By the way, I believe the Yanks also have a pretty good C prospect in the lower minors.
We'll see how things turn out......my crystal ball is on the fritz.

Hicks will end up as a part time bench player. If he gets 250-300 ABs he'll be lucky. IMO The Yankees should have found a way to unload Gardner for a solid pitcher. And now seeing how Cashman forgot about how talented the kid the Rays just got from the Rockies (Dickerson) for next to nothing I'd have taken him over Hicks in a heartbeat.

...Hicks is a 2016 version of Chris Young...a platoon/backup OFer.

    Couple of things:
Although McGee is a good one, why would the other genius, the Colorado GM trade Dickerson for a reliever who can be a free agent after this season?
Maybe Trashman could've should've offered Justin Wilson for him?
    Of course!

As for Dickerson being a "future batting title winner", he may have to pick it up a bit vs LHP and away from Coors Field.
    Career vs LHP:
    .246 BA, .677 OPS, 1K per 3.3 AB.
    Career away from Coors:
    .249 BA, .695 OPS, 1K per 3.6 AB.

Personally speaking, I would very much like to see what Heathcott and Williams can do, both younger than Dickerson as is Hicks.

...there's also been rumblings about Hicks being a "head case"...and though he's listed as a switch hitter, he's not a very good one because he still sucks vs RHed pitching when batting from the left side of the plate.
...last year's (.235 .302 .359 .661) still = suckage, especially from a corner OFer. For his career it's even worse. (.206 .284 .311 .596)...,maybe he needs to bat RHed all the time and forget about trying to be a switch hitter...for now, he's a platoon player, and rightly so.

...it seems that derogatory splits somehow apply to Dickerson but not to Hicks...hmmm...deja vu...and I was not the one who touted Dickerson as "a future batting champion". That was a quote from an article and I'm far from the only person who thinks the Rays made a great trade. ...and the reason Dickerson was traded was because Colorado had a surplus of corner OFers...and TB acquired him very cheaply...looks like my point was unintentionally proven.

...as far as Murphy, not many catchers hit better than .277 last year. In fact, he had the highest BA of any AL catcher with 150 PAs or more. He's also a solid defender and the pitchers like pitching with him in there.

I know you weren't the one attributed with touting Dickerson as a possible future batting champion. And I know Dickerson is clearly the better more accomplished hitter than Hicks......while Hicks, 26 yrs old has yet to play more than 97 games in a season (last year) and has had 819 ABs stretched over three seasons, I would think it's still too early to label him as a type of career platoon backup player.

As for Dickerson, I was merely pointing out his lopsided stats away from Coors Field and vs LHP in regards to him being a possible "future batting champ", and there have been other "Coors Field hitters" in the past - but I do think the kid generally has shown to be a good hitter.

As for Hicks- yes indeed he has sucked vs RHP but let's just consider last season when he played more ( 97g) than his previous two seasons.
    Hicks overall, .256 BA/ .721 OPS
    Gardner .259 BA/ .742 OPS

Yes Hicks sucked vs RHP, .236/.663.....
....but was outstanding vs LHP, .307/.870 OPS.
And it's not a fair comparison of Hicks and Chris Young.
Young over a 10 year career has batted .263/.837 OPS vs LHP, not so overwhelming is it?
...has batted just .224/ .704 OPS vs RHP...... poor.
Maybe we shouldn't expect Hicks to continue to bat .307/ .870 OPS throughout his career vs LHP.....but it's reasonable to expect him to do "well" vs LHP and if he can raise his BA 15 or so points vs RHP as he gains more ABs and playing time, he'll be a good productive player who has already established ability to help the team with his glove and speed/SB..... he stole 13/16 bases in just 97 games and has a career 74% success rate at stealing bases....nothing to sneeze at, Gardy stole 20/25 bases in 151 games. Hicks is also insurance against injury to any of the outfielders......and I don't think it's ridiculous to say Hicks could eventually earn more playing time or outright take over a position.
And there's still a possibility Gardy won't finish his contract as a Yankee.

We may not like the Murphy trade or believe Trashman should've gotten more in return for him, but it's done......let's see how it turns out.

I for one am quite surprised that Gardner wasn't moved during this off season.

Sorry, please excuse me while I parrot the mantra that the sky is falling and every trade, acquisition and move the Yanks make is either a bad one or will eventually become a bad one.

Personally if we're comparing Dickerson to Hicks, I would have prefered Dickerson. Now that doesn't mean I think Hicks was a bad pick up but I do agree with whoever said it that he basically another Young, & though I didn't like losing Murphy (as I was a fan) it'll be interesting to see what Sanchez can do.
