It's kinda crazy, all of our backcourt players can create for themselves:
    Hendo
    Lillard
    CJ
    Roberts
Crabbe, to a lesser extent (runs thru screens a lot, power dribbles then shoots, developing a little floater) .

Finding minutes for Roberts will not be a problem. But it probably will vary from game to game depending on what the coach needs on the floor.

Playing two scoring/ball handling guards more often will cause match-up problems for the other coaches, even if Roberts only averages the same minutes that Frazier did. Roberts can play with either Dame or CJ @ SG, and still make a positive impact of his own.

Having Roberts available may improve our guard defense.
Reason, Dame and CJ can play tighter defense and not worry about drawing fouls. Maybe the reason they have been playing soft D is they both knew they had to play as many minutes as possible. Adding Robert’s minutes frees Dame and CJ to take more chances on D. I can see CJ turning into a bulldog defender with Robert’s minutes available on the bench.

How about playing Dame, CJ & Roberts all at the same time for short stretches? That short lineup could drive some coaches crazy. May not happen often, but… Some nights Stotts might go big with Henderson and & Crabbe playing more, other nights go small playing Roberts more. How do other coaches game plan for that?

My point is, Roberts extends the range Stotts now has to either fix match-up problems, or, create problems for the other teams.

NO has added another nice roll playing weapon to Stott’s arsenal, Roberts.

I have a hard time imagining The Dread Pirate Roberts won't get more minutes than Frazier. First, unlike Frazier, he's a competent NBA backup. Second, I don't think Olshey wastes his time with that trade just for a 2021 second rounder. Roberts wasn't brought here to be glued to the bench.

Roberts has a 54.4 PER right now, making him about 300x better than Frazier. :ghoti:

Plus, if Lillard or CJ goes down for awhile with an injury, it won't be so bad as when Frazier had to play a lot.

There's a lot to like about Roberts, but the big thing to me is that he can shoot the 3 and he can pass - he fits our system perfectly.

Hey, does anyone know if NO asked/traded for Roberts (vs. MIA asking us if we'd take him)? I know it's kind of a minor detail but to a player it can mean a lot:wink:

Roberts had 1 practice w/ them & then was told almost immediately that he's coming to us. IMO u don't work out a guy 1 practice if the plan was to trade him, that's the sort of thing u do if u had planned to keep him. So if u did what MIA did... it sounds like NO called MIA.

So we have Olshey admiration threads for not signing more expensive talent last summer, and all he got was...

a 2nd-round pick 6 drafts from now, and the 3rd-from the bottom pick in the 1st round, 3 drafts from now.

The gym towel boy could have done better than the "genius."

We're going to be having to sigh Crabbe and CJ soon to big deals, and Dame's big extension is going to kick in. The Blazers just so happen to be a team where so many guys are still on their rookie contracts.

Seriously. I know nothing about the CBA. But being tens of millions of dollars under the minimum payroll, I could have signed a couple of unwanted contracts like Olshey did, and gotten draft picks that are either higher, or at least, sooner.

The admiration threads assume that the pirate got a treasure load of golden picks, but after I finally dug up what he got for Brian Roberts, we see that this old barge of a Trade Deadline holds only barnacles.

I think having good culture leads to good chemistry....and that leads to more wins. If a player doesn't fit in with his teammates.... I am not sure he is destined to be on the team for long.

Look at the Bad boys of Detroit, they were not choir boys, but they brought in players who fit their particular culture. The guys who did not fit in, were moved. IMO, fitting in with the culture of a team is about being on the same page as your teammates. However I do think you make exception for players who are "difference makers". But those types of players need to be more than just good, they need to b great. Otherwise you may get short term success, but not long term success.

He might get more than just garbage time. CJ as backup point guard isn't always ideal. I can see Stotts playing Roberts and CJ together some for a few minutes in the second quarter to relieve CJ's ball handling duties.

Miami: We're in the luxury tax, Neil, a repeater tax, in fact. We just traded away a guy and are now we're barely in, but still in.
NO: Give us a 2nd rounder and we'll take Roberts, and you'll be out.
Miami: Thanks for saving my ass with our owner, Neil. We'll talk some more later.
NO: No problem, but we still might make an offer to Whiteside.
    Miami: Understandable.
NO and Miami at the same time: Can you believe what Morey's doing.....
