I agree it should be moved back. There are too many 3's in today's game. Its become a requirement virtually all guards have to be able to hit it; while it should be a rarer skill only a few of the best NBA shooters benefit from. http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/1...vericks-says-nba-mull-moving-3-point-arc-back
They also need to widen the court. Find a way to move all seats one row back. Make the corner three 23.5 feet (18 inches further back), but make the sideline 2 feet back so players big shoes can fit there. Along with a deeper three at the crest, perhaps 25 feet, it would give more court spacing which would make the game more exciting. Players are too big, strong, athletic, and quick to be in the same sized court as 50 years ago. They should really use an 11 foot hoop as well but that seems too radical of a chance. That would make a dunk a truly epic play!
"Guys are shooting a foot behind it anyways" "It would open up play for more drives." If guys are already shooting a foot behind the line, then how would moving the line back open up the floor for more drives? I know the gist of what he's getting at is not everyone shoots a foot behind it currently, so it would discourage the lesser gunners, but it doesn't sound like he's fully thought it through.
It would open the lane. Guys aren't required to shoot a foot behind it. If it's required to shoot from farther to get 3 points it would be harder to double the post and for guards to dig on post players as well. I do however think the floor should be widened by at least 3-5 feet. Stepping out of bounds on the sidelines happens way too often. I think that would open the lane more because they could also extend the side three pointer
Hell no. I love the way the game today puts a premium on shooters. Move the line back to where 3 pt FG% drops down and it just becomes a desperation shot instead of a mainstay of an offense. Make the 3 pt shot a low percentage play and then smaller guards like Curry and Dame suddenly aren't nearly as effective and teams start loading up on bigger guys who can post up to gain an advantage. Don't mess with what ain't broken.
What they need to do is make any alley-oop thrown behind the 3pt line worth 3pts. Giving a second option to score 3pts would spread the floor.
It would be interesting to see the cumulative league wide 3pt shooting percentage each year since it was introduced. If the average is over 40% then the line needs to be moved back, if not it needs to remain where it is.
Found it. http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_stats.html 3pt shooting percentage has been hovering around 35% for years. No reason to move the line.
League Average 3 pt% - 35.2% Steph Curry 3 pt% - 46.1% I suspect that's the reason Cuban wants the line moved. If you can't beat 'em, change the rules.
There you go. And make every Assisted lay up a worth Three, and every assisted lay up with a hockey assist worth Four. Let there be a true alternative to the three in playing basketball.
