Beginning with July 2016 Cap figures we kinda of have to re-calibrate our $$ expectations for: Star player Starting player Key reserve players Others I understand that Damian qualifies for almost 1/3 of the entire team cap because of levels he has/will reach this season and which will go into effect with this extension. 33% of cap is $29.7M. What price point do you think the other levels will be? What about the MLE? With our team of un-proven players.....it will be very important to understand how much we can spend for each category of player, especially as we evaluate guys like Leonard, McCollum, Crabbe, and Harkless. Thoughts?
Having cap space does no good if you fritter it away by over-paying guys like Leonard/Crabbe/Harkless.
Leonard's value is dropping like a rock. Crabbe on the other hand, I think will get a nice offer. Harkless.... I have no idea.
I don't think there should be a breakdown by position. For instance CJ will only get a few million next year, so his position will be cheap, but he likely gets the max eventually. Instead pay guys that we expect will provide more value than the cost of their contract. Guys who have been here such as Crabbe, Meyers, Hendo have familiarity that may be worth more to us than a new team. So they may provide a tad more value on the same contract here than elsewhere. Still we need to be wary of overpaying any player. The cap will go up a ton next summer too. So overpaying a player in the short term isn't the hindrance it normally would be. But in two summers the cap will go down while the DameCJ contract costs go up so we should keep flexibility for 3+ years from now.
Dame also will get the 25% max or 27.5% max if he is All-NBA. The calculation is complex it's not just the straight % of cap you'd think it would be.
Yeah even with Crabbes struggles I think he gets 10+ million. So few wings in the league, overvalued 3pt shooting and he's young. Meyers I have no idea, he's had multiple injuries for years now. He makes some of the worst mistakes I've ever seen but then flashes a flurry of surprising skills. Hendo is solid but past his peak athletically. Harkless isn't a rotational player on a contender. All four of these guys have risk of being an overpaid contract. Some fans will hate the thought of letting them walk and they improve elsewhere. I'm fine either way because I don't think any become a league average starter. But they have value at the right price. Hopefully Neil makes the best choice.
Meyers is now done for the season and will require surgery. Do we even want him? Keep in mind im saying this having only ever purchased one jersey in my life... his...
Won't the new MLE be valued at about $9M?? Basically a 30% increase like the cap? I get that we don't want to overpay. But what does that mean in dollars?? @Draco.....CJ gets max extension?? Really?
CJ is a guarantee for a max or very near max. Enes Kanter and Tobias Harris got the max. Every legit starter coming off a rookie contract has gotten the max. Averaging over 20ppg CJ more than qualifies as a starter. MLE doesn't increase with the cap, as with rookie scale contracts its set at specific dollar amounts regardless of the cap.
Ouch. I like Dame a lot, but that sort of salary disgusts me. That sort of money should only go to players who have already lead their team to the Finals.
