On that same point, I was listening to Colin Cowherd this morning, and he has this guy... uhh... Jason Whitlock I think... and he made a really good point:

Look at LA. They tried with all the big names after Shaq left. And they also had coaches that didn't fit the players. For example: Brown was their coach, but he couldn't teach defense. So, what do they do to try to remedy the defensive problem? Hire Mike D'antoni. He can't teach defense, and they had the wrong personnel player wise to fit his system. Then, they go all young with the exception of Kobe now... and they have Byron Scott... who is notorious for not liking young players and developing them.

The sum of the parts needs to match. Just going after big name free agents can hurt you more than it can help. Like I said with the Houston thing. Look at Brooklyn. Look at the Lakers with Howard and Nash.

Win now doesn't guarantee you'll win now.

Definitely. It's all about the journey not the destination.

Going for big name free agents doesn't work. Miami is the only team to do it in the last 20 years. But even there they already had a player they'd previously drafted who won a title.

It's an illusion the Lakers, Knicks, Nets, Bulls clingh to, to their detriment.

Doesn't always work, but it works sometimes. Case in point you mentioned Miami, But the ring they won before wouldn't have happened if Miami didn't go get Payton Mourning and ShaQ. Those are some big free agents.

Lakers went to the finals when they signed Payton and Malone to pair with Shaq and Kobe.

    Boston signed Garnett and won.

Going after big name free agents CAN pay off, but its a crap shoot I think. Chemistry means alot. Just ask the breaking bad dude...

Shaq and Garnett were acquired in trades. Thanks for proving my point.

I'm interested in Olshey's strategy this offseason. We can talk about free agents and who'd we'd want to keep, but he must have a method to the type of players he wants. This is the third playoff team he's built and my guess he wants to make this one a championship winner, eventually.

ahh I thought they signed when their contracts were up.
Still, big name players/free agents. Still kind of the same isn't it? Your still trying to bring in a big name whether it be through FA or a trade?
You don't do either without the premise of upgrading the team. I may have missed a post or two, but I thought this was steering in the direction of putting big names together not working.; Sorry if I went off track. :)
