Ahh, I remember when Rafael Palmeiro won a gold glove playing less than half his team's games in the field. Kerr should be disqualified because he coached half the season. I don't think any other argument should qualify him.
And I remember when Magic Johnson played in the NBA all-star game and won MVP despite never playing in any NBA game that season.
You don't remember it because it didn't happen. He announced he had HIV in November of 1991. The 91-92 MVP was Jordan. Magic's last MVP was in 89-90 and he played in 79 games taht season.
That would be awesome though if Magic Johnson was named MVP for the whole season and never played a game...
Well, Kobe Bryant only played in 66 games this year, and sucked balls in 65 of them, and was an all-star. This happens when you let people vote for awards. The popular choice isn't always the right choice. BNM
Why are they voting for the awards, such as coach of the year, BEFORE THE SEASON IS OVER? That is like telling a coach the playoffs are not important in deciding who the best coach is, and it does not matter what he does in the playoffs. Or to a student, your final ranking in the class will be decided on your grades at spring break, and your finals tests scores do not count. The NBA needs to change the timing of the voting until after the playoffs are over.
All of these awards have ALWAYS been for the regular season. That includes MVP, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, 6th Man of the Year, Most Improved Player, All-NBA, All Defense, etc. There is only one award in the post season that matters, that's winning a ring. The only other award for the post season is Finals MVP, but that almost always (Jerry West being the exception) goes to someone on the championship team. BNM
Appreciate the thoughtful response. However, I still do not get it. Just because it has always been that way, does not make it right. We have seen many players have great regular seasons, and then not show up for the playoffs. Cliff Robinson comes to mind when he was a Blazer. And coaching strategy becomes much more important in a 7 game playoff series vs the regular season. We have seen coaches get outcoached many times in the playoffs; Nate McMillan comes to mind vs the Rockets. Heck, Stotts just outcoached Rivers with a more talented roster. Voting after the playoffs would still leave the players/coaches on teams that do not make the playoffs, eligible for the awards. But the playoffs give everyone a better picture of the players/coaches abilities against stronger competition. Voting before the playoffs does not make any sense, especially for coach of the year.
