How do you know he didn't put any thought into it?

How do you know he didn't study the question, decide at length, through research, that no matter the outcome, he doesn't like giving the Lakers a proven starter/ potential all star regardless of what we get? Maybe he doesn't want to see the Lakers competing with us next season for playoff positioning?

How do you know he put no thought into it?

See its posts like this that piss many people off around here. :)

Just saying and playing devils advocate. ;)

I wouldn't even call it wishful thinking, seeing as nearly 3/4 respondents wish for it not to happen. I merely considered this a thought exercise.

I gave it every bit of thought that this idea deserved, which was very little. Trading CJ for ANYONE right now would undermine Lilliard as a leader, and that would have a drastic impact on team chemistry moving forward. The only way you trade CJ right now is if that's what it takes to land a player that's better than Lillard right now, and there aren't any of those in the draft, and there are very few of those in the NBA.

EDIT: And it was an interesting thought exercise, PtdlPlatypus...

    IDEA only....save your insults!!

Would you trade CJ to PHI for Nerlens Noel?

IMO Philly is going to have troubles very soon with too many frontcourt players on the roster needing meaningful PT. They have Embid, Okafor, Noel, Saric and will be adding Simmons or Ingram. They lack a scorer like CJ. Nice trade for both sides?

Next step (team would have to know before pulling trigger) would be to sign DeRozen to replace CJ.

Lillard (PG) - DeRozen (SG) - Aminu (SF) - Noel (PF) - Plumlee (C)

    Thoughts?

There no way I do that trade due to Simmons has no outside shot at all teams going figure this kid out and he have trouble scoring. Yes he can pass and dribble but if going to LA he going have to play small foward. A position in the NBA you have able to shoot the 3 ball a shot he can't make.

No, but would I trade CJ for Noel and the 24th pick in the draft? Possibly. The reason I would even consider it is Noel is great on D. Defense is our biggest need imo. I still don't think I would do it though.

I do like Noel better than Okafor.

And I hate the idea of DeRozen with or without CJ so scratch that one.

No. Noel is not the big we need. Okafor might be though. I would make that trade based on basketball and not taking chemistry into the equation

Whoops--didn't mean to sound like I was fishing for validation; I was actually commenting on @yuyuza1's post referring to the concept as wishful thinking.

Thanks though--always nice to feel appreciated!

I think tall athletic skinny PF's with a history of injuries, who can block shots but have average offensive skills are fairly easy to find.

So even though I like Noel, and would like to have him on my team.......I think we can find someone else like him in time. It's not like he would make us immediate contenders.

This is a very good point. If you go back and look at the last 10 drafts and sort them by win shares, you will see it's actually the exception that the any of the top 3 players in the draft are among the top 3 in win shares. Or sure, there are some (like Durant, Anthony Davis and Karl Anthony-Townes), but you also have drafts like 2011 where the three players with the highest win shares were selected with the 15th (Kawhi Leonard), 30th (Jimmy Butler) and 60th (Isiah Thomas) picks in the draft.

It is very common to see 2nd rounders crack the top 10 in win shares for their draft class (guys like Draymond Green, Chandler Parsons, Danny Green, DeAndre Jordan, Paul Millsap, Goran Dragic, Marc Gasol). So yes, there are always guys who slip through the cracks, but I think that's more prevalent in the past 10 years than in the old days.

You are absolutely correct. So many guys are drafted in the first round based on upside. They are young and unproven, but many GMs are desperate for the 1 or 2 in 14 that will actually live up to their hype. The guys that tend to slip through the cracks, or older guys which have more college experience or international players who have experience playing professionally overseas. Most of ythese guys go late 1st round are 2nd round. They aren't as sexy as the next LeBron, but much more likely to actually turn into a solid NBA player.

I'd only do it, if I KNEW C.J. would NOT re-sign with the Lakers and would come right back to Portland after his rookie contract was up. Of course, the rules prevent making that kind of under-the-table handshake agreement, but won't it be great to end up with BOTH Simmons and C.J. while the Lakers end up with neither? We all have our fantasies...

Yeah, if you were going to do CJ for Noel & #24, I'd rather just promote Crabbe to starting SG and use the cap space on a major upgrade at center. Whiteside, or even Howard, paired with Noel would be a solid front line.

This! I was going to comment on this earlier. People say Simmons has SF skills in a PF body, but as you noted, he lacks, perhaps, THE most important skill for a SF in today's NBA - an outside shot. In 33 college games he made EXACTLY ONE 3-pointer. That's not 1 per game, that's 1 per season. He may be able to get away with that against college competition, but that missing skill will be exploited by NBA defenses.

Sure, Simmons MIGHT develop an outside shot over time, or he might not. And, if he does, how long will it take?
