Why can't Paul and Cuban start their own league?

Because the 400 of the best players in the word are currently under contract to the NBA. And those that are about to be free agents are part of the NBA players union.

So, unless you hope to get a couple defectors, all the best players leaving college and a few international players, your going to be about 350 players short of having a competitive product.

The best players get preferential treatment by the NBA so why would they leave?

I just want Kiki and/or Silver to get up and explain how Green shouldn't be suspended when they just suspended Dahntay Jones and set the precedent.

If I'm Steven Adams I'm doing the same thing Green did at around the same time. That would put the NBA in a bad spot.

-Kicks dummy in the balls again-

I'll just keep paying the fine because the league demands that we see STAR PLAYERS! It's got to be FAIR to the fans!

How unbreakable are those contracts, tho? I don't know - but it seems like they all have a right to just quit their jobs (paying whatever penalty might be in the contract for doing that). You can't force someone to work for you, even if they signed a contract that said they would. Then it would come down to enforcing non-compete agreements when they sign with the new league, which aren't likely to be enforceable, at least not in some places.

Suppose you were a group of multi-billionaires and you didn't really mind losing a whole lot of money for a few years in order to acquire the cash cow that is pro basketball. You overpay the rookies and anyone who wants to leave the NBA to make more money - and who doesn't want to make more money? The average NBA career is what, 7 years? Eventually, even those that weren't willing to switch retire, and if you've successfully lured away the young talent with $$$ in the meantime, you've won the war.

If I'm Billy Donavan, I'm putting Nazr Muhammed into the game in the first quarter and I'd do everything I could to either get under Green's skin or give a celebratory knee to his stones routinely. Green is a mental midget and will most-likely either retaliate or wither, rendering him useless either way.

But I'm not Billy Donavan so...
