I like the Avery Bradley choice. Nice to reward a somewhat under the radar guy who gets it done.

Batum with two 2nd team votes. LMA with 1 2nd team vote. Ok. But Wesley got one 2nd team vote this year? The poor guy can't stay in front of anyone anymore (not really his fault of course).

 

That has to be a kick in the nuts to Paul George, seeing Draymond in front of him.

 

I'm hoping that Olshey will add at least one player to the Blazers' roster who's capable of making at least the also-ran list next season.

I think it is partly scheme. Notice all the Hawk players receiving votes? They aren't all great individual defenders. That team as whole just plays very good D.

But yes, we need to get better at defense and add people who help us win.

 

Budenholzer has really stressed team defense in ATL the same way it's taught in SAS. It would be nice to take advantage of that by prying one, or more, of those guys away from ATL.

Um, given your description, the guy would have to be Budenholzer.

 

I definitely think Aminu should have gotten some votes. However, the team finished in the bottom half of the NBA in Drtg, so I'm not surprised.

 

Unless we lose Crabbe then Horford is the only one I want (Milsap will take too much in trade equity to make it worth it imo). If we lost Crabbe and had a little money to burn then I would also consider Bazemore. I don't see room for him here though unless Allen leaves.

 

Didn't Whiteside come in 3rd for defensive player of the year? But he's 2nd team?

Edit - He indeed come 3rd, Draymond 2nd. But they have DeAndre on 1st team, and Whiteside on 2nd team. #NBAlogic

 

Nah, once veterans like Millsap, Horford and Bazemore learn the proper fundamentals of team defense they carry that knowledge with them. Watch how active they are, their positioning, active hands, etc.

I am assuming different people vote for the award vs the 1st and 2nd teams.

 

The voting was REALLY close between him and DeAndre Jordan. Jordan is definitely better at defending the pick and roll.

Plus, the voting is now done by members of the media, not by the coaches, like it used to be. So, there will be some homer votes and some votes based more on reputation than current season performance.

I'm a sure that's true. It's still just illogical and inconsistent to me. I guess that's on par for the NBA, though.

 

Do you think those people are confusing better with more versatile? Aminu is not a great defender by any means, but he can not guard that great 3 positions, while Milsap is a pretty good defender for 1

 

I completely agree with you on Jordan. It just looks funny at first glance.

 

Nope, I think it's irrational homerism. I like Chief, but I also realize the obvious, that Millsap is a far superior defender (only player in the top 10 in both BLKs and STLs, led the entire league in Defensive Win Shares, 3rd in Defensive Box Plus/Minus 4th in DRtg, 5th in DPOY voting, 2nd Team All Defense, etc.).

I think Rudy Gobert has more grounds for complaint about Paul George. Arbitrary rules about positions trump more first team AND more total votes.
