After a 12-4 season, where they had the best record in the league, and a disapointing playoff performance, losing on a last second kick, the Chargers are probably going to fire Marty Schottenheimer. He's 5-13 in the playoffs. Would you fire Marty if you were in the Chargers organization?
I would. The goal of a football team is to win the Super Bowl, and he has proven that he can't win in the playoffs, no matter how good of a team he has.
I think he gets one more year. I dont think they will fire him this season, I think he will retire next yr. ne way dude is pushin 70
I'd keep him. Its not his fault they intercepted it than fumbled. It's not his fault the dude fumbled a punt return. Theres nothing he can do about that..He had the right game plan, and they executed pretty well for the most part. You cannot fire Schottenheimer...
I can see why you would say that kingjamez, but its also partly his fault for the play calling. They played extremely conservative. They ran LT nearly every first down. They weren't playing to win, they were playing not to lose, and Marty is to blame for that.
Well, after the 14-2 season, I wouldn't fire Marty if I was in charge. It wasn't his fault that the game was lost except for only running the league's MVP, LaDainian Tomlinson, only eight times in the second half. The Chargers had some really big key mistakes after all of those fumbles; especially that one with five minutes left after Brady was picked off, whoever picked it off fumbled via Troy Brown forcing it, giving the Patriots the ball back, as well as 8 points. It would be asinine to fire Schottenheimer after this season, and after all the things he's done for this San Diego Chargers organization regardless of how the playoffs turned out.
Regardless of how the playoffs turn out? I don't get how you can say that. The playoffs are what matters. He came up with a bad game plan, he stuck to it, but he played not to lose, like I said before. He can't take this team to a Super Bowl, he's past his prime, they need a new coach.
They went 14-2, and there's a reason for that; of course it was in the regular season, but they beat some damn good teams. There's a problem that he has in the playoffs for not winning a playoff game since 1993, and that's a poor stat, being only 5-13 in his playoff career. He has a big chip on his shoulder that he needs to get off. I think if San Diego had a new head coach, the players wouldn't listen as well. It seems as if Schottenheimer has gained the respect of his players, and they listen to him. I'm not saying that there's no chance the players would listen to a new coach, because after time they probably would, but Marty has gotten his team to have a good relationship with not only him, but the rest of the coaching staff as well as players around eachother. Granted, the playoffs are what matters, but if the San Diego players would have played like they did in the regular season, not turning it over inconsistently, they would have won the game. They pretty much had it sealed in the 4th Quarter when Tom threw the interception, then all the momentum shifted with Troy forced that fumble. It hurt the Chargers' chemistry on the sidelines, and the Patriots were pumped up, more than ever.I say they give Schottenheimer one more year. I know it sounds homer-ish to say it, but after such a good year this past season, it'd be asinine to fire him over a 3-point playoff loss. One more year, one more playoff loss? I say they fire him, because it wouldn't be worth keeping him if he could only lose them another playoff game, without any good excuses from it. I think the Chargers players respect him enough to go out there and play their hearts out; Sunday, it just seemed like they didn't fully commend themselves to accomplish that playing role, and if they can't get it done next year, we all know for sure that Marty has got to go.
