Prehumans living around 800,000 years ago in what’s now southeastern Spain were, literally, trailblazers. They lit small, controlled blazes in a cave, a new study finds.

Discoveries in the cave provide the oldest evidence of fire making in Europe and support proposals that members of the human genus, Homo, regularly ignited fires starting at least 1 million years ago, say paleontologist Michael Walker of the University of Murcia in Spain and his colleagues. Fire making started in Africa (SN: 5/5/12, p. 18) and then moved north to the Middle East (SN: 5/1/04, p. 276) and Europe, the researchers conclude in the June Antiquity.

To me, this is the biggest proof that god doesn't exist. Why would a perfect god screw up so bad with the first few drafts?

So, basically they unthawed Bill Walton from SE Spain. Makes sense.

Kind of calls into question the migration from Africa theory. Prehumans 800,000 years ago, not in Africa.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recent_African_origin_of_modern_humans

The accepted[9] theory is that there were two dispersals.[16][33] an early one via northern Africa,[9] and a second one which replaced the early homin populations.

The first dispersal took place between 130,000-115,000 years ago via northern Africa, but died out or retreated.[9][10][11][12][13] Chinese researchers question this extinction, claiming that modern humans were present in China already 80,000 years ago.[14]

    Nothing new here.

We've always known pre-humans make up the bulk of the population of Western Europe.

God can exist but be far from perfect as depicted in western religion.

I've thought about it often, and believe it's equally, if not more plausible that there is a god (somebody who created us) than otherwise. But in my mind he would be no different than you and I. He might be the most qualified in his society to play the role of "god" but that is not to say somebody else isn't superior to him in other areas.

But as far as somebody watching over us and causing/stopping car accidents, or saving little Timmy from drowning in a river, I am 95% sure that no such god exists.

2 Thessalonians 2King James Version (KJV)
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

    3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Written by a man who's perception of the universe (and his own planet) is miniscule.

People believe in God because of fear.
Fear of what happens when you die. Fear of hell.

    This is me.

Best line in that video has nothing to do with religion, but with mutual respect between parties engaging in conversation:

(0:45) "I'd rather explore each other's ideas in real time, rather than assign a label to it and assert you know what's going to happen in advance."

    Can I get an "Amen"?

I watched that movie on Netflix recently, it was pretty funny that Ron Perlman obviously didn't need as much caveman make-up as the other Cro-Magnons.
