If McDonagh could ever develop into a pp qb he'd be one of the top 5-6 guys in the league. Skjei may actually be better offensively.

And why would Edmonton do that deal?

    because Dump :)

A top 5 pick + a 23yo with high potential for a 26yo D is optimistic to say the least.

Dumb trades happen all the time but i'd think Chiarelli has a better grasp of what a dumb trade is and isn't.

If you have to ask why Edmonton would do that deal, stop watching hockey. Their defense blows. The organization is desperate to make the playoffs. Their top 2 centers are McDavid and Draisaitl. I swear, it's like some people don't even watch this sport. Edmonton does not need RNH and the 4th pick. What they need is a first pairing defenseman in his prime. 31, it's not optimistic. In fact, most people would want more from the Oilers that I've seen. You act like 1st pair defenseman grow on trees. I love how you just said 26 year old d. Gimme a break. McDonagh is worth a ton more than RNH who basically has been a 55 point center so far. Why I say McDonagh is overrated by Rangers fans that doesn't change he's a first pair defenseman on a great contract. Most offers I saw were asking for the 4th pick and Hall. Or the 4th pick and Draisaitl.

The way the game is now, first pair defenseman are the most valuable player on a roster. Crosby and Malkin are not winning these series for the Penguins. It's the role players who aren't going against 1st pair defenseman. The top defenseman are shutting Malkin and Crosby down for the most part. The problem is most teams are using scrubs at the other 4 defenseman.

The issue though with dealing McDonagh is with G/Staal basically now below average on horrible deals, Klein wearing down and Skjei still learning, you'd really be making our D a below avg unit. Even with McD onboard its a bottom 10 group. If they can find a way to keep Yandle that would help but it goes back to what do you do with 18/5.
If you dealt Stepan for a young dman like a Brodin maybe they sign a stopgap ufa C for 1-2y at 3-4m.

The team in whole needs to be rebuilt. Especially the D core. Klein is a guy that seems to be hugely popular around the league due to his play and contract. IMO, Rangers need to go with Skjei, McIlrath and acquire at least 2 other young defenseman thru deals and start building another young, d core. Moving Hayes, Nash and Stepan probably could do this. McDonagh is a guy that I would use as I said to get a franchise player with the 4th pick and have RNH replace Stepan so they can use him to improve the defense. Trading Stepan would probably get you Brodin and a first. Then they could use that first to take a defenseman. The Rangers have a lot of players people want. They just have never put them on the market before.

This board has a lot of posters like the clowns on HF in that they overvalue draft picks so much it's mind boggling. I would bet that no GM in the sport would give 2 craps about the 4th overall pick if it meant giving it up for a 26 year old, first pair defenseman on a great contract. Draft picks are unknowns unless you are talking about a player like McDavid, Crosby, Ovechkin, Matthews, ect.... Some drafts the first 10 players turn out to be studs. Then others like 2012, the players in the first 10 turned out to be vastly overrated as prospects.

It's been reported that Edmonton is shopping the 4th pick. Shopping RNH. Wanting a first pair defenseman. Well, somebody has to tell me other than McDonagh, what team has put a first pair defenseman out there that is affordable.

I dont think they are desperate to make the playoffs though. they certainly don't seem to be in a rush otherwise they would've made a similar type deal last year or the year before. someone mentioned it before that your going to get a FRANCHISE player with the #4 pick. RNH is a franchise player also. your giving up 2 franchise players for mcd who might be gone in 3 years ufa. noway do they do that deal.

    Yeah. The Oilers aren't desperate to make the playoffs. Counting this year they drafted 4th, 1st, 3rd, 7th, 1st, 1st, 1st, 10th

Nothing to show for it success wise. Please. The Oilers are an embarrassment. Their fans know it and they are sick of it. They want wins. Not excuses.

all that losing and they still got a brand new arena. they will still draw fans out there. its not like a big market canadian team or a big market us team that expect results.

its not like say carolina where you lose x amount of years and suck no fans show and now your in the relocation buzz.
