I thought we were talking theology Marz...not nationalism. And for the record. Christians and Muslims have waged wars and persecution to bring about change as well. Our govt conquered a native population with the ideology that they could bring those pagan locals into the Christian fold. They almost wiped out the Hawaiian population in the name of their God as well. No free pass for Religiously based govts..going to church once a week to confess sins doesn't make everyone civil after all. I'm no Marxist but I'm no Christian either. The Mafia is pretty much church based as an organization...they ask for forgiveness after whatever bloodshed they practice.
How about those Spaniards? They mudered by the millions in central and South America as well as the Caribbean.
Yes, I was, well the moral code handed to us by Judeo Christian religions. You brought up Marx who rolled it all into a government function. But I am going to give this up, I guess you guys will need to learn first hand that trying to live with people that will not accept a moral code, or live by another, like many Muslims do, will not work out as you would like. It really doesn't have squat to do with the shit that happened to the Polynesians or the crap the Spaniards pulled. I should think that reasonable intelligent people would recognize ignorance in action that has nothing to do with the teaching of Jesus. Shout Christianity all you want, but ignorance is still nothing but ignorant and nothing Christian about it. But I am just a student of religion, not a devotee of any.
My Marx reference was just an example that not only religions have written moral codes...whether we agree with them or not..and the subject absolutely has reference to Christian crusades, Muslim crusades, etc....now, I consider myself a reasonable, intelligent person whether I connect morality to Jesus or not. I'm not shouting either by the way...just a simple weigh in on the debate that was going on. I respect individuals faiths..doesn't mean those religions aren't tainted by immoral justifications in our own history. The moral code.."Thou shalt not kill" sure has been put in the closet. You reference ignorance? All faiths have been guilty of ignorance.
There is no "Judeo Christian" religion. There is Judaism and there is Christianity. The foundations and core beliefs could not be more different. One is salvation by faith in Christ. One is covenant with god as a people. Therefore one is driven to proselytize and the other opposes. One teaches that faith is key to salvation; the other has no concept of salvation but teaches mitzvot as key to living ethical life. I could come up with a long list of differences. "Judeo Christian" is what people say when they mean Christian but are trying to sound inclusive even though they know nothing about Judaism. MarAzul did not give a citation for his quote on Marxism. Change in and of itself is inevitable; the universe is constantly changing, but particular changes are not inevitable. Marxist belief is overthrow of capitalism takes conscious action and is not inevitable. Nothing in writings of Marx or Lenin teaches "Any course of action then, no matter how immoral it appears to a world that believes in an absolute or universal moral standard, is morally good within the Marxist-Leninist worldview". There is no "absolute universal moral standard" at all. We can see that every day. People literally kill each other over what they consider "absolute" moral standards that another disagrees with. So it seems like MarAzul gave an unattributed citation from someone with essentially no knowledge of Marxism. I doubt MarAzul is any more familiar with, say, Communist Manifesto (a very short book BTW) than he is with Origin of Species. And I STILL don't see what this has to do with Hillary Clinton! Anyway. Volunteered to campaign at Pride.
While I'd prefer Bernie Sanders, I'd take Hillary over Trump any day. Trump is an idiot and anyone who votes for him must be a few sandwiches short of a picnic...Trump will start World War 3...he will be the last president if he's elected...didn't anyone learn from George W's two terms of bullshit
Judaism and Christianity share the books of the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. Many of the precepts of the US Constitution and our legal system have their roots in the teachings of those books. The term "Judeo-Christian" is a shorthand for that shared belief system. Here's a pretty good accounting: https://www.nccs.net/2003-05-judeo-christian-roots-of-americas-founding-ideals-and-documents.php
I would posit that you have a skewed definition of ethics. Please pardon my "mansplaining", but ethics are moral principles that drive behavior. The doctrine of salvation by faith is not an ethic. Christian ethics would include (among others): "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Matt. 22:39), "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you" (Luke 6:27), "Love one another as I have loved you" (John 13:34), "As far as it depends on you, live at peace with all people" (Rom 12:18), "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but consider others better than yourself" (Phil 2:3), "Look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world" (James 1:27). Properly applied Christian ethics center around sacrificial love, which involves elevating others' needs and interests above ones own, and caring for those who cannot care for themselves. I can't speak for those who choose to ignore these tenets.
The Old Testament of the Christian bible? e_blazer, there is no "Christian bible" in Judaism and Jews never say "Old Testament" (except when quoting)
Judeo-Christian is a term used by Christians, not Jews. It started in the 1950's and was their definitions of things Christianity and Judaism had in common. That's all it really means.
By Christians, and others. Perhaps she doesn't understand the Old Testament was lifted from the Torah.
