This can not be ignored. And is why I would not give up much to get him. Plus he only has one more year on his contract. (3rd year is a player option) But 17 million is not that much anymore. If you can trade him for Meyers (Who is from the midwest and might want to return) for about 10-12 million per, we only lose about 5-7 million in cap space. That is a low risk option.
I definitely don't want to waste cap space on Monroe. And if you sign him, he has to play center, so you need a stretch four. He didn't work well with Drummond at all.
He would only make sense if you brought in a guy that could play defense like Biyombo that could play pf next to him.
And therein lies the problem, because he lives in the post. So having someone like Biyombo would create a similar issue that they had in Detroit with Drummond/Monroe.
Absolutely, but that's why he's gettable at all. There are plenty of examples of guys who had potential, but didn't put it together until their 3rd team. So, yeah, it's a gamble.
It all comes down to what you have to give up for him? If the Blazers can trade for him using cap room and some small pieces, that is not so bad. Given he doesn't play defense and is basically on a 1- year deal, I can't believe teams are rolling out big offers for him. That said, the same guy that told me that they would go after him in the first place long before it happened thinks the Blazers will make a run at him again. He actually fits fairly well with Meyers who can stretch the floor but then also play defensive Center which he is much better at than playing defense at the '4'. The problem then is Monroe would have to guard PF''s.
I think he is our plan C or D option if we strike out in free agency. Not a priority but a backup plan.
So would a low post scorer, and a guy who could stretch the defense a bit too Do we have enough to land him via trade (without giving up something that would hurt) and Horford?
The issue is really that he'd eat up cap space. So unless we are striking out on other guys, I hope we don't go out and get him first.
And he went from the best player on a team to the third best player on a team, which makes a big difference.
I'm thinking it's more of an order thing. 1) draft 2) first 72 hours of free agency 3) rest of free agency 4) trade time. If we completely strike out in free agency, he'll start to look very attractive.
We could trade Aminu/Davis/Connaughton without using any cap space for Monroe...... but man that sure seems expensive.
I'm probably a little too hard, but my feeling is that they got him using capspace, they're unhappy, they shouldn't get more than what they got him for - so, cap space and future 2nds. Otherwise, they can keep him.
Well, and I like Davis more than Plumlee coming off the bench........ but Plumlee doesn't make much money right now.
