I think we're in an ideal situation. If Whiteside chooses the Lakers over us, it will reveal his true colors and what he really wants: i.e. a big contract in a big market where he can dial it in going forward (or he's just dumb). Not only will we have dodged a bullet, but that bullet will go to the Lakers. Sounds good to me.

On the other hand, if Whiteside decides to go to Portland, I can assume, despite the location, weather, and taxes, he really wants to win and be competitive (while also picking up a max contract). I mean, if he wanted to just regress after getting his check, why would he come to rainy old Portland, when he could be taking it easy in LA or Miami?

We have the advantage of courting these guys while our weather is ridiculously nice.

I'd be like, "Hassan... ever heard of climate change? Portland is going to be the new NorCal. This is the place to be dude."

Or, the pessimist view: if Whiteside chooses the Lakers over us, it will confirm for us once again what NBA free agents really want, i.c., the opportunity to play in a big market in great weather surrounded by celebrities, amenities we will never be able to offer. Not only will we fail in free agency, but have done so because the Lakers yanked the football out from under us.

Other the other hand, if Whiteside decides to come to Portland, we will be disrupting our "high character culture" by bringing in a guy who's been known to be a headcase, even under the tutelage of Pat Riley and Dwyane Wade, on top of being a known injury risk with both knees. Every minute he's on the court, we'll have to wonder if he's going to give it his all, or when (not if) his body will eventually fail him, setting our franchise back years.

One thing about making a mistake in signing free agents, your biggest problem is losing out on cap space. Sure that is still bad, but it is better than a bad trade where we are giving up quality players or picks to get a player. It's not like other free agents are lining up to sign with us....or are they?

Thank you. I went into that discussion thinking Portland was somewhere around #3 or lower and came out of it thinking Portland might actually have a shot. History warns me that the Blazers will come up as the Bridesmaid and that is hard to dismiss. I try to be objective but the fan in me wants the Blazers to come away with some type of Home Run whether it is Whiteside or someone else.

I wouldn't worry about cap space, next year's free agent market looks worse than this one once you get past the top 4 players or so. You go all in for players this summer and leave the fantasy of the mythical "lopsided trade" out of your mind.

No offense, but this is the exact POV of the fools who needed a C, but passed on Drummond. I don't mean to invalidate your feelings, but note that they are just that - feelings.

But we have seen Whiteside in the NBA. He's not a college player that is an unknown future in the league. He bounced around until he caught on with the Heat. Of course, Miles never had a season as good as Whiteside.

Very nice article, but the best part of the whole thing is that HW wants to decide on day 1. If that happens, it'll huge for all teams interested in him

It will certainly let teams know they need to move to Plan B versus like what LaMarcus did to the Suns and hung them out to dry.

just thought it would have been worth a mention in the article, but as I said, it was excellent, so I'm just nitpicking a bit.

Maybe he's already made his decision. Not saying he's choosing Portland but Aminu was announced pretty much right after FA opened. Hard to believe they got a deal done in an hour or whatever it was lol.

I just went back and looked. Aminu agreed to a deal 20 minutes after FA opened. Yeah ok

We didn't pass on Drummond? I guess technically, but for Lillard

I think my heart would have stopped if he had been available when we picked Meyers.

If I were in his shoes, I would already be about 90% sure of where I wanted to go. I am guessing my agent would have told me the number they were going to offer, so the only thing left is to talk with the coaches and owner and hear their pitch. Technically they could still change my mind...so I would still want to meet with them. But I certainly would not go in without having done any research nor having thought about it over and over in the past 30 days.
