The team has until 11:59 p.m. Thursday to ink a deal with a new television partner and team sources on Monday told The Oregonian/Oregon Live that multiple potential suitors are in the running and competition remains "wide open."

    ...

For starters, according to one source, Comcast submitted a contract offer that was below market value. More importantly, the Blazers have long been exasperated by Comcast's lack of distribution and angry that, through no fault of their own, a large faction of fans cannot watch Blazers games. Because of national distribution disagreements between Comcast and DirecTV/Dish, satellite television subscribers have not had access to Blazers games for nearly a decade, a major black eye for the organization.

    ...

For weeks, the vibe inside the organization has been that the Blazers were leaving Comcast for — depending on the day you asked — either ROOT or Fox. But, in an age when households are increasingly "cutting the cord," there also have been talks with nontraditional suitors and even some discussion about creating a hybrid broadcast partnership that features some kind of internet streaming option.

    ...

But with roughly three days left in negotiations, everything, including a new deal with Comcast, remains a possibility.

A Sunday report in the Seattle Times suggested the Blazers were leaving Comcast SportsNet Northwest, whom they have partnered with the last nine years, in favor of a new deal with ROOT Sports Northwest. But Blazers PresidentChris McGowan said Monday those reports are "untrue."

McGowan also said they were looking for a broadcaster but nothing was decided and we might know in a couple of weeks. Then 2 days later, Calabro is signed, sealed and delivered and you know that didn't just take 5 minutes to come up with and then they announced it.

McGowan can't really say anything until a deal is completely in place so what he says now is almost completely inconsequential.

This is savvy negotiating by the Blazers.

Step 1: Have Seattle newspaper say Root is going to get the contract.

Step 2: Have local paper say negotiations are still open but Comcast's offer is way too low.

Step 3: Sit back and wait for Comcast's new and much larger offer to come in at the last minute.

Step 4: Tell fans that "Things are going to be different this time" while announcing that Comcast's offer was just too good to pass up.

No matter how good the deal is and how it is available, I think Comcast can't undo the poor job they have done in both distribution and service.

Again, comcast has made deals with some of the others, and now you can get playstation vue which has comcast sportsnet.

Directv is being an asshole when it comes to pac 12 networks (comcast apparently accepted the terms directv refuses to). They are just as bad and own a portion of root sports. Difference is root sports is currently on comcast though.

It's a good question. Why is there a deadline to sign a TV deal?

It's probably exactly a year from when the old deal is up.

Self imposed maybe? Would certainly help push the bidding.

Or perhaps there's a clause in the current deal that requires a new deal be done at least a year before it expires.
