nah. Barnes is overrated and it showed in the playoffs. honestly, what would he bring that we dont already have? plus, Layman could be a barnes 2.0 and for 1/10th of the cost.
Barnes has played in the shadows of Curry, Thompson, Green and even Iguodala. I think he'd show a lot more in a featured role. After all, he is Harrison Effing Barnes.
if you look at their last year in college stats, Layman was better than barnes in the majority of stats. Barnes scored more cause he shot twice as much. and i said "could be". that doesnt mean he will be. you never know, man.
Yep, Aminu turns it over more than Barnes. Which is why he may be better suited as a stretch 4 than a pure 3. The problem is, after Dame and C.J. we really don't have any good ball handlers. That means when one of Dame or C.J. is not in the ball game, Aminu is often our secondary ball handler- and that's not good. I thought maybe Brian Roberts was going to be that guy, but he rarely played, and will most likely not be back. Aminu is still a great bargain, for what he is, and Barnes at $20+ million per year, is certainly not the answer. So, after a big man (Whiteside, Horford, Howard, etc.), maybe we should be targeting a great perimeter defender than is also a good ball handler. Crabbe has a lot of potential as a 3 and D guy, but he's no better at handling the ball than Aminu or Wesley Matthews before him. So, who is out their, under the radar, that could meet this need and not cost more than we can afford? BNM
I disagree. He's an overrated, below average NBA player that is going to be severely overpaid. You can no longer use the upside or potential label for Barnes. He's been in the league four full seasons. He started 81 games as a rookie and has played over 2000 minutes in each season. This isn't a Jeermaine O'Neal situation where he's suddenly going to set the world on fire with his play. He's had plenty of opportunity to show the world who he is and he has. He's a career 11.6 player who will never live up to his hype coming out of high school and will never be worth whatever he's about to get paid. I'm sure I'll get accused of being a rose colored glasses wearing homer, but I'd personally rather have Aminu, Harkless, Crabbe or Henderson than Barnes. They all posed a higher PER this past season than Barnes, and all but Crabbe have a higher career PER. And Crabbe is the same age as Barnes, but with less than 1/4th the NBA experience and has shown more improvement. Plus, all are, or will be, considerably cheaper. BNM
I think Barnes is terribly overrated, so I hear you. But I don't expect much from Layman. I am NOT advocating for Barnes by any stretch.
the reason that i want to believe in Layman is that he models his game after Gordon Hayward.... and i would absolutely LOVE to have Hayward as a Blazer. i just dont wanna get my hopes up cause 2nd rounders dont usually pan out as Blazers.
Out of HS, everyone ball washed Barnes, he was slated to be a top 3 pick in his draft. Then he went to UNC, and vastly underperformed, dropped in the draft. Now in the NBA he has continued to vastly underperform. I'll pass on giving a career underperformer a max contract. I don't want to re-live the Batum era.
I was waffling on Barnes but knew we would get plenty of opportunities to watch him in the playoffs. (24 games... front and center) He did not show enough to get excited about. I still think he is better than what we have at SF, but not by enough to warrant a huge contract.
I would rather go after Derozen and play him as a sf even though he doesn't have a 3pt shot and is a Harden esque player over paying Barnes the max.
Harrison Barnes (career PER = 11.6) fantasizes about someday being as good as Nicolas Batum (career PER = 15.2). BNM
