I think the media is partially responsible for creating this frenzy. And politicians are under pressure to promote the idea that racism is the primary force behind these shootings, which gives further credibility to the notion in that officers are on a black killing spree.

The fact is, this sort of thing is not new. Officers have been doing shit like this for decades, and all races are victimized. I'm not saying race has nothing to do with it, but it's not the central issue.

As I've said before more white people are shot by police, even though black people commit more violent crime. So if anything, you could say white people are disporportionaliy targeted by police. But I don't think that is the issue at all.

The focus should be on officers, they should be screened with personality tests and given better training, and also held accountable for what they do. But the black lives matter movement fans flames of hatred against white people and police in general, to the point where this guy is motivated to "kill white people" especially officers". And a spokesman for BLM says she understands why he did it.

So wait. Im a hypocrit when all youre doing is confirming what i was trying to say? That stats can be used and adjusted to always be presented in a way to try and prove your point?

Look, i feel for the police. I really do. They have families at the end of the day to go home to. Sometimes you only have a split second to make a decision and sometimes you might fuck up and do something terribly wrong. Cops deal with peoples shit constantly, greatly unwarranted at times. Its easy for a cop to eventually be cold to a lot of peoples issues. I get it.

Think about this for a second.... im white. When a cop drives behind me, or is near me i get nervous. I get angst. And i want to get as far away as i can. Im a law abiding citizen. I dont know why i feel this way. I just do.

Now, black people feel this same way. However, there is an added fear of what does this cop want to do to me as they are being pulled over. Is this cop racist? Do i fit the profile? Is the cop going to hurt me? Right or wrong, these are the thoughts and fears many black people think about. As a white person, i will literally never have to have those added thoughts and fears in my entire life.

Its a shitty time in the usa.

Is it better than 20 years ago? Of course. But that still is not good enough.

On a more serious note, I'd encourage everyone participating in this thread not to treat this as a debate. When you treat these types of things as a debate, you're invested in winning and that can take away from your ability to incorporate good points or viewpoints and experiences you simply don't have access to, based on your background and all your identifying factors.

I'm not trying to out-logic anyone or beat anyone down to make them see the light. I generally try to avoid being snarky these days on serious topics (except with Denny, because he obviously deserves it). I just want to inject my perspective and read others' perspectives, because conversation leads to probing holes in our thinking about issues that we never necessarily confront (especially if we mostly only talk to people we agree with or read things from sources that share our general world view). If I didn't want to read, respond to and be confronted by differing opinions, I'd just ignore this thread or sub-forum.

Difficult at times to refrain from entering the fray. So much of what is said here is rubbish and unfortunately no matter how much explanation is used to show why an argument is bad the OP will stick to his guns, no pun intended. One can even agree with anothers conclusion and say merely the one argument used to prove the conclusion is faulty and the OP will balk at looking in to whether their rationale is legitimate.

It's like a competition or game here instead of an honest inquiry. Once the commenter has been pegged as adversary there is no comment they can make to get the OP to see things differently. Well, at least they won't admit it here for others to see. Never admit you might be wrong, it's a sign of weakness I guess.

Wargames the movie said it best.

I agree, more or less, with the bulk of your post, but not sure about "better than 20 years ago? Of course". Better than 70 years ago there is no debate there. But around 1997 I personally don't recall it being noticably worse than now.

Is there something you can point to where it makes it clear things have improved in last 20 years?

(I must be getting old because 20 years should feel like a long time, but it doesn't.)

No, perhaps 70 years should have been used. You are correct.

I just saw the police defending blowing up the suspect because he "lied to and taunted negotiatiors" during the TWO hour standoff.

It also said he wrote something on the walls in his own blood, so clearly he suffered. Yet they try to act like a headshot from a sniper and a bomb are the same thing.

I got this info from reading the scrolling stuff on the bottom of Fox News. It is always on at the gym.

They had him cornered for two hours, so are we to believe anyone was in imminent danger? I doubt it, they just executed this crazy guy.

Missed some, Brown said the negotiation was going nowhere.

WOW, 2 hours. I've spent more time at the DMV.

Nice to know our nation of laws means jack shit to the cops, that's what.

It seems like a bad response to an act against police brutality to use police brutality.

They had him cornered for 2 whole hours. Fuck them, are they going to blow up people holed up during a domestic violence call next?

Here is an interesting article about it, http://www.dallasnews.com/news/crim...bomb-to-end-the-standoff-with-lone-gunman.ece

A couple of things, I support the police using that. They had lost enough officers that day. If the snipers couldn't get sight on the guy they can't shoot him. If the only option was to send more officers in to rush the guy or send a bomb, fuck it, BOOM!

What I didn't know is that police forces across the country have been training to do this, it just so happens that Dallas was the first to actually try it. This wasn't some McGyver thing they came up with on the fly, this is an actual procedure in the police training manual. Don't know if it is the feds or a private company that is training bomb squads to go from being a unit designed for protection and prevention to an offensive force but it is a concern.

I also didn't know that police departments have stores of C4.

Too bad they had to blow the dude up. It would be nice to get more info out of him in just how much coordination he had with BLM leaders.
He clearly knew where and when to be there.

Before I read it, how are there only 2 options? My first choice is take the guy alive anyway.

How was he going to get away or hurt anyone else? Did he have 6 months of food and water?
