For losing top level players via free agency? For example LA leaving us should've netted us the 31st pick in the 2016 draft.
Doubtful. The relative value of a single pick in a two pick draft versus a 7 pick draft (like the NFL) is much higher. If there was a compensatory pick it sure as hell wouldn't be 31st overall, maybe more like 61st.
I disagree, the talent pool in the NFL is vastly larger, some teams get 3rd/4th round picks for losing good players which is the middle of the draft. 31st is dead middle.
The reason it doesn't work in the NBA is that theoretically a team is increasing their number of picks by 50% under your model. A single NFL compensatory pick is a 14% increase.
I see that issue, however if an NBA team loses a multiple time all-star/all-NBA/MVP player for nothing that warrants the extra pick in my mind, I personally think OKC deserves compensation for KD. It would be a good addition to the new upcoming CBA, it would promote parity too even if the 31st pick isn't exactly a hotbed for talent (but with a little luck you can land a Butler or a Crabbe).
Yup, and the flip side of that is that team losing the pick is getting their draft cut in half. I don't think any sports league would go for a system where you lose half your draft capital in a year for signing a free agent. I think the closest the NBA could come is "sandwich picks." Draft picks that come between the first and second round, but aren't taken from any team. That knocks every team in the second round down one spot per sandwich pick awarded (including teams receiving sandwich picks). If they wanted to do a tiered system like the NFL has (better comp picks for losing better picks), they could award a sandwich pick between the first and second round for premium free agents (however the system the develop determines that) and picks at the end of the second round for any other free agent.
You are ignoring the relative value of losing a player like LA in a team sport with rosters of 15. Baseball's compensation round follows the first round and that is a sport with a 40-man roster along with the 25-man big league roster.
Not to mention 1500 players drafted every year. I think a team signing a top line free agent should give up their #1 pick, outside of the lotto maybe. If it's in the lotto, their #2.
You could also work around this by teams forfeiting their top pick if they sign top-qualified FAs, such as the MLB does.
If the NBA were to ever do this i think there should be a limit of 3 to 6 per year and added MID 2nd round like 1st pick of Comp picks is like 38 to 40
It wouldnt surprise me if this is brought up in the next bargaining agreement. But I doubt the bigger market and more successful teams would go for it. Nobody in this this league gives a fuck about the smaller teams. They already have plans to steal your best assets. Owners stab each other in the back and complain about their lack of ability to sign big time fre agents. Just follow Mark Cuban on Twitter for the daily bitching.
I like picks between 14 and 15 for losing max level players. Picks after the first round for losing $15M+ free agents.
If you lose a top free agent you should get their DNA so you can clone them and after 20 yrs you can have them on your team again.
Teams that lose free agents already get something, cap space. If the player they lose makes that much of a difference, they also get a better draft pick.
