OK, but if he gets hurt, the Blazers are on the hook for his salary. That's a big risk in a major sport where players do get injured often enough.

I think it's interesting that he didn't get a player option or trade clause in his contract..if ever they were to sell high on CJ it would be this trade deadline but there are only a few players I'd do it for...I hope he's healthy and stays here long term. He's good for Blazer culture and has a work ethic..given his age..he might improve as a defender over the next 2 years or so.

Ok, this is huge. Why isn't this being talked about more? Using this year's cap instead of next year's is almost an 8-10% savings on his actual salary.

And it provides a tangible benefit for signing him now vs next season.

Probably because we'll be capped out for the next 4 years regardless. Lowering future tax bills is probably the only benefit here.

EDIT: Olshey knows what he's doing with the savings move. We now have our two stars locked up to 2021. Our team is truly on the rise. :drumroll:

This comment is rather misleading. Presti knew what he was doing, as much as Olshey did. Things changed, and that could certainly happen to the Blazers in a few years....

Durant played 9 seasons for the Sonics/Thunder franchise. And this will be Westbrook's 9th season in OKC.

Damian's current contract runs out after his 9th season, CJ after his 8th.

It could happen to our team. I like Olshey being proactive with Dame and CJ. Things just didn't work out for the Presti and the Thunder. Durant left and Westbrook may be next. We'll see how proactive he is with Westbrook.

You're right it is misleading after rereading my own post. I will edit that.

We would have been able to match CJ next season as he would have been a restricted FA, but I like how Olshey was able to sign him now vs next season as Yuyuza mentioned. It is is a good savings move if Olsehy is indeed able to use this year's cap instead of next year's.

As for the information you provided about contract length for the aforementioned players you're 100% correct. Olshey will be presented with the same challenge as Presti when it comes to re-signing Dame and CJ after the 2021 season. Hopefully it won't lose one of our star players as it happend to OKC. I like to believe Dame and CJ truly love our team, city, and the fans.

Wasn't trying to call you out or anything, just explain, thus far, NO hasn't done anything more than Presti. Things are fragile and fickle. A lot can change quickly in the NBA. Even though it worked out just fine for us, look at the Aldridge situation last offseason. Assuming Dame and CJ stay healthy and productive, it'll be on NO to re-sign these guys, and then we'll have had them longer. To your point about Dame and CJ love Portland and the fanbase...... absolutely - these two are very different personalities from KD and RW, and I appreciate it.

Honestly, setting aside the whole "OKC fucking Seattle fans", I almost feel bad for OKC. You were moments from going to the Finals, you choked it all away, then you lost your franchise star, and your next one likely bolts next season (if he isn't traded first).

At the same time, as KD once said, "Tough shit." Fuck OKC and their fans. It's karma! Bring OKC back to Seattle!

The thing with Aldridge is he never actually wanted to be here. He wanted praise and adulation, but beyond that, he couldn't have cared less to be here.

I was one of the few wanting to trade Aldridge before the end of his contract. I'm happy we don't have him on our team anymore. This became Dame's team and there's no lookin' back now!
