https://www.samharris.org/podcast/item/faith-in-reason Ranging a variety of topics: The regressive left, our failure to engage in honest discourse, conflating disagreement with moral failings in our opponents, and the relationship between faith and reason. 2 1/2 hours, so way too much for me to summarize completely, but possibly of interest to some of youze guys.
I'm at work, can't listen. Does he talk about how HBO has Sesame Street? I just found that out this weekend and I'm scared.
Sam Harris isn't for this crowd. Maybe Limbaugh or one of his many clones that attempt to copy his methods for success would get more traction. A Pat Robertson sermon maybe?
I'm sure you mean this is a simple joke, but your reply is POTP. When people are so goddamned disrespectful and so quick to assume that others won't actually listen to alternate points of view, it makes actually having an intelligent conversation impossible. Left. Right. I don't give a fuck how somebody identifies as long as they are willing to have a reasonable discussion and I try to not automatically assume that everyone who doesn't agree with me is acting in bad faith, but this is exactly the kind of horseshit tribalism that has made political discourse impossible in this country over the last couple of decades. Fucking internet I guess?
Great link...started the podcast and will chip away at it...thanks for the link Nik..I'm going to the library today and see about picking up his book.
There's a lot of Atheists on this board, as well as people fed up with the "regressive left", so I don't think so?
Eh? I don't always 100% agree with him but on most topics SH is the clearest and most brutally objective thinker I have ever heard or read. The mathematician he's talking to in this podcast on the other hand is just terrible on the topics Sam is known for, spouting irrelevant nonsense most of the time.
I wasn't terribly impressed with his guest, but I thought the content of the discussion was interesting.
SH has a couple recent appearances on Dave Rubin's podcast which were a little more entertaining conversation for me. Latest - http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/dave-rubin/the-rubin-report/e/ep-39-sam-harris-45371996
You have been on here a lot longer than I and the bent here is obvious. I know there are atheists here and I just was making a lame joke about the various conservatives we all know exist here that probably are blissfully unaware of my original comment because they see a topic heading that is not on their radar. Sam Harris equals antireligious bigot. Nothing to see here. Yes, obviously a simple joke voicing my frustration. So no need to take me to task for it. There is a LOT worse being said in the OT forum on a daily basis. Those of us that like Sam Harris regardless of political persuasion are going to listen to the podcast and not care about my snide joke. Those that like Limbaugh and other hatemongering pundits I have frankly given up on and don't care what they think about me or my comments. I hate to say it, but I have given up trying to see the strengths of their views. I keep thinking they must have some good points because there are so many that think that way. Maybe my way of seeing things is faulty I say to myself. So I tried and tried again. My head hurts from banging it against the wall. I have reached my limit and can only bring myself to make jokes about them. They are on the wrong side of history on too many subjects and I have given up. Sorry about that, Nik. Keep up the good fight for those of us that have been trying to be civil and understand their world view.
