you don't have an argument then because nowhere on earth are fifty thousand students having free throw practice in a single school gym...I grew up outside a town of 75 people...county had 3000, good schools...graduating class of 18...we weren't overcrowded but sure as hell didn't have a shooting coach...we had hoops on barns to figure it out. Plenty of great achievers come from poor inner city backgrounds but just like winning in sports...you have to want it more than the competition. The key to preventing bad habits in math or basketball is simple....you ask questions, you read and apply it....I read books by basketball coaches before I tried my hand at coaching....didn't go to a coaching school.

nonsense.....you disrespect a lot of hard working teachers.....you can teach kids, but you can't make them apply it..you can teach someone to read and they can go through life without reading a book. Choices......as a child my library was a lot further from our farm than 20 minutes, but I had a bicycle...if the movies were 20 minutes away, kids would find a way to get there.

You can pay out of district fees to any library in the country and use their ebook systems...it's much easier to connect these days...the only places in Oregon that closed their libraries was Jackson county and that was because of a majority of no votes on the ballot...tax payers didn't want to pay for it probably because they had cable tv bills to pay. It's a shame. I went to a conference where they talked about it...libraries are going to have to start retailing for profit or they won't compete and they are becoming more and more website based.

Then you know what the word oblivious means. Just learn to apply it.

You completely ignore the different cultural and economic situation these kids come from. I guarantee you that any gang member wouldn't be one if he was adopted by a family in my neighborhood growing up.

You think he's just a piece of shit with no motivation.

I recognize the benefits I had even growing up a poor white kid in a rural neighborhood.

This useless library bullshit is a bandaid on an amputated leg. Libraries where I grew up are always fighting for funding. I'm sure libraries in inner cities aren't swimming in cash.

Don't tell me what I think dude.....I've seen a lot of the world, been in a war with poor urban kids from all over the country and taught for over 20 years...I don't think anyone is a piece of shit because of circumstance but I think ignorance is hand in hand with a lack of motivation. You have a lot of violent imagery in your angst about the world we share...if you are looking to argue with common sense and reasoning....you may need to stop sensationalizing disadvantages and learn that our system can work for those willing to put in the effort....being a victim takes practice just like being successful.

Having access to a library doesn't mean you need to read at a library. It gives kids free access to books that they can take home.

So what's more relevant to the topic at hand--culture or economics? If a rich white kid grows up with distant parents who don't care about his intellectual development, and a poor black kid grows up with a single mom who works 90 hours a week over three minimum-wage jobs but insists that her child read whenever she can be there to make him do so, which child is better positioned for academia?

I grew up poor too (single mom in section 8 housing, barely attentive babysitters who parked me in front of Nickelodeon), and learned to read early as well because my mother recognized the importance of education. Who's responsible for ensuring prevalence of that understanding in inner-city neighborhoods and culture?

Funding Planned Parenthood and allowing people to have free or low cost abortions would eliminate the need for more libraries.

Wouldn't that mean we'd have to build libraries on Mars?

I honestly am really lost on what you guys are debating, haha, but I think we can all agree that the city could invest billions in multiple libraries and it could still not have an affect on kids unless they are parented correctly and have the correct guidance to utilize such benefits. To me, it's more about the parenting and less about resources like a Library.

So the real answer is..... stop letting morons have kids.

    I agree!
