My dad never laid a finger on my brothers and I but he always made it exceedingly clear that if we did not conduct ourselves as gentlemen, he would kick our asses from one end of town to the other. And there was no doubt he would have. My father was the ultimate gentlemen (he was one of the few men I ever knew who always (without fail) stood when a lady first entered the room) and I was fortunate enough to observe the respect it earned him. That said, it has become an increasingly rude world (especially on the road) and I struggle mightily to maintain some level of equanimity when dealing with a regular parade of rude assholes. It helps that I am a strong believer in karma......Too, I've been gratified to see that a graceful response by me to a rude asshole often penetrates their thick skulls and makes them realize that they were indeed unnecessarily rude. At least then I can walk away with the hope that they have learned something positive. And if not, I stayed true to myself and they are the losers. I've also learned that by being patient and polite when dealing with people on the phone (no matter how long I've been on hold (yes, I'm talking about you Comcast) more often than not it gets me better service, if for no other reason than they have been regularly abused by rude customers and my approach is a breath of fresh air. I guess it all depends on what you want out of others...and life in general. Rude people may win the minor battles but they always....always...lose the war. It sucks to be them......

In my career...the elderly were about the kindest people I encountered day to day...but I live in a rural community. I think the demographic you live in skews the opinion a bit.....a senior New Yorker compared to a senior Midwestern farmer....people in urban communities are often snarkier than rural folks in my experience but UCD said it well.....karma's a bitch.

Probably has, but more of an outlier or exception to the rule.

I mean to me personally. I always get props for teaching my son this way and we never get negativity.

    "
Meh. That literally never happens and has never happened (to me or my son).
    "

otherwise you were speaking for everyone in the world.

Courtesy definitely seems to be a thing of the past. I go out for a meal with my parents about every other week and almost always experience young parents letting their children take up all the chairs in the waiting areas while my 75 year old mother and 82 year old father stand. It used to shock me but it is completely the norm now.

Riiighht Pfft. You like to spout facts for "everyone" all the time. Nate called you out on it just the other day. It's your M.O. and it's fucking stupid.

Just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it doesn't occur, right? Funny being on the receiving end of that isn't it? Kind of ironic. :)

Giant pet peeve of mine. When im at winco. When you get past the cashier, put your cart at the end of your lane when bagging groceries. When you keep the cart near the cashier and not pushed out all the way to the end of your lane, other people cant get through. Ive seen so many people stare right at me while bagging their groceries completely oblivious to being a complete asshole. And if i ask them to move it to the end, they act like im a total jerk.

    People are fucking terrible.
