Glavine moves within three wins of 300

NY METS 2, ST. LOUIS 0 (5 1/2 INNINGS, RAIN)
FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Tom Glavine moved a step closerto a milestone. Anthony Reyes tied a far more dubious one.

Glavine pitched a rain-shortened one-hitter for his 297thvictory and David Wright hit a two-run homer as the New YorkMets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-0, in a game calledafter five innings.

The start of the game was delayed 54 minutes by rain and washalted again for good in the middle of the sixth after another90-minute delay. The weather was the only thing that could slowdown Glavine, who has won back-to-back starts for the firsttime since April 7-12 and needs three more to join the coveted300 plateau reached by just 22 pitchers.

"It's one win closer," said Glavine, who recorded his 25thcareer shutout and first since September 29, 2005 againstColorado.

Reyes (0-10) pitched well in defeat, but dropped his 12thstraight decision dating to last season, tying the franchiserecord set by Bill Kissinger in 1896 and 1897.

"He pitched a lot better than we hit," Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa said. "He's pitched better than his record. Today was agood example."

"It's frustrating, but it is what it is," Reyes said. "I justtry to go out there and be aggressive."

As for Glavine (7-5), he had gone five straight starts without avictory before defeating Oakland on Friday with eight stronginnings.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner was just as effective onWednesday improving to 20-6 against the Cardinals by allowingonly a second-inning single to Scott Rolen with two walks andone strikeout.

"Tom pitched well. He was quick, fast, efficient," New Yorkmanager Willie Randolph said. "I hope he's back on track. Ithink he is."

Glavine recorded the second one-hitter of his career and the23rd complete-game one-hitter in Mets history. New York, whichentered the league in 1962 as an expansion team, have never hada no-hitter.

The Cardinals had their only serious threat in the second, whenrookie Brendan Ryan, who hit the game-winning home run onTuesday, grounded out with runners on first and second.

St. Louis had seven straight fly-ball outs between the fourthand sixth.

Wright hit his 13th homer and first since June 9 when heconnected for a two-run blast in the first off Reyes to scorePaul Lo Duca, who had singled.

"It was fastball that he left over the middle of the plate,"Wright said. "You have to hit those mistakes."

Reyes allowed two runs and two hits in six innings. He becamethe first pitcher to lose his first 10 decisions in a seasonsince Anthony Young went 0-13 for the Mets in 1993.

While Reyes has not pitched well this season, he also has littleto work with. The Cardinals have scored just 29 runs in hisfirst 12 starts, the lowest run support of any qualifyingpitcher in the major leagues.

Rookie left fielder Carlos Gomez helped Glavine with a nicerunning catch at the warning track to take a possible hit awayfrom Juan Encarnacion in the fourth.

Cardinals outfielder So Taguchi was 0-for-3, ending his hittingstreak at 18 games.
